About this deal

The lazy way to apply chain lube, is to stick your bike on its centre stand or a paddock stand, let it tick over in first gear and spray away.

Working along the length of the bottom section of chain, spray the lube on the top edge, which is the inside edge that’ll press onto the sprocket. Commuters like Alex just want to ride their bikes with minimum fuss, so a standard wet lube is probably the best option. The reason I stopped using the Castrol chain wax was that the Castrol can have a history of being defective. The O-ring is sealed and helps keep the pins lubed but the plates also need regular lubing or they’ll oxidise, stick and wear faster. Generally, dry chain lubes have not performed well in our testing, but Maxima Chain Pro Dry Formula and Ride Mechanic Bike Milk have bucked that trend. However, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to chain lubes – with countless brands offering a range of different types of lube and formulas – so finding the best chain oil isn’t always easy.

For non-racers, for whom peak speed and efficiency isn’t the ultimate goal, reducing drivetrain wear – and therefore extending the life of your components – can potentially save you a fair amount of money. Only problem is that diesel are greasy (I don't know how to tell correct on english, but you probably undesratnd what i wish to say), and you will spend little time to clean them. Each link can be individually broken by hand, but the quickest and easiest way to do it is to run it over a round section of wood or plastic tubing. But I watched the fortnine video where they/he goes through an analysis of several different chain lubes. Simon joined BikeRadar in 2020, but has been riding bikes all his life, and racing road and time trial bikes for over a decade. There isn’t a chain on the market that doesn’t require a small amount of maintenance from time to time. Place the chain in container number two, pour over enough methylated spirits to cover, and securely attach the lid.

But did you know, you can get over three times the mileage from your chain (and to an extent your sprockets) if you regularly lube it up. Under laboratory conditions, geared bicycle drivetrains have been shown to reach above 98 per cent efficiency, meaning just 2 per cent of energy inputted is lost to friction. A good chain lube can smooth the chain’s engagement with the cassette sprockets and chainrings, and maintain proper shifting performance. Most lubes contain synthetic oils, along with friction-reducing additives such as PTFE (Teflon) and carrier fluids that evaporate after application. I am going to replace the chain with a better one anyway, so maybe it is a good time to do this experiment.

The biodegradable, non-toxic, and PTFE-free formula keeps the gears shifting smoothly and the environment safe from harm. Under clean, laboratory conditions, more viscous lubricants would be expected to decrease drivetrain wear rates. Metal kebab skewer/spoke/clothes hangers bent into a J shape – one per chain, for dipping the chain into the wax. Ultimately, it’s not worth risking a broken quick link while riding, just to save a little money, as it could cause you to crash.
