About this deal

TIP: Evaluate urine sediment and/or bacterial cultures to rule in or rule-out bacterial urinary tract infections. Urine pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline the urine is. The pH can change with diet, but can also signal the presence of infection or metabolic disease. Normal urine in cats and dogs ranges from mildly acidic to mildly alkaline. Extremes in urine pH beyond this range are more likely to be associated with disease. Protein: Protein in your dog’s urine can be associated with lower urinary tract disease, renal dysfunction or damage, or reproductive tract disease. b. Has an inflammatory process somewhere along the genitourinary tract caused by bacterial infection. Urbilinogen - Acute and chronic liver prenchyma damage, hemolytic jaundice, pathological state of the intestinal tract

Compare the reaction colour with the colour scale after 30-60 seconds (leukocyte test field after 60-120 seconds). The best reading time is at 30 seconds (leukocytes at 90 seconds). Colour changes which occur after 2 minutes time, are irrelevant and should be ignored. The urine sample should not be older than 2 hours. Three days after Leroy came home from his abdominal surgery he began urinating more than normal and in quite a larger amount. When I took him to see the vet they tested his urine and found that he had a urinary tract infection. Some of our top-selling products include the AlphaTRAK 2 Blood Glucose Monitoring Kit, which has been calibrated and validated specifically for cats, dogs, and ferrets. The Uripet testing strips feature a special non-return valve that makes gradual filling simple and helps prevent overfill and spillage.

Collecting Your Pet's Urine

Because this is a sensitive test (but not very specific), a negative reaction is usually reliable, which makes it a good screening test. a. The conclusion could not be established without knowledge of the patient's hydration status, a water-deprivation test and perhaps a vasopressin-response test. The fact that urine dilution of this magnitude has occurred suggests, but does not prove, that a sufficient population of functional nephrons is present to concentrate urine. Ammonium biurate crystalsare indicative of liver disease or portosystemic shunts in cats and dogs ( Figure 15). These crystals and uric acid crystals may be present in dalmatians due to a defect in purine metabolism. TIP: Compare questionable test results to results obtained by another test method, such as the sulfosalicylic acid (turbidometric test). Determination of urine protein-creatinine ratios are a more reliable method to determine the magnitude of pathologic proteinuria.

UTIs and other inflammatory conditions can increase protein in the urine (called proteinuria), so a protein-to-creatinine ratio is also helpful. [5]. Protein in cat urine is normally less than 1 gram/liter, and greater amounts in the urine can indicate kidney disease. Proteinuria also affects blood clotting, immunity, hormonal balance, lipid balance, and several metabolic functions [6]. Consider the following results obtained by analysis of a voided urine sample obtained from a 5-year-old neutered male Persian cat:Casts/HPF: a.k.a. Casts per high power field. Casts are little flexible clumps of proteins and cells that act like “papier-mâché” by molding into the exact shape of the kidney tubule from which they originate. Some casts are not worrisome while others are suggestive of kidney damage. It is strongly advised that the urine sample be analyzed within 60 min of the collection as it is an unpredictably unstable biological fluid [ 8, 9]. Environment can rapidly alter the urine with variable artifacts after collection. Therefore, it is recommended that urine samples be examined as soon as possible following collection [ 15].
