About this deal

Reopening in the heart of Paris’ 8th arrondissement is Puiforcat’s boutique, with interiors by the brand’s artistic director Charlotte Perelman

Depictions of nudity, sometimes sexually explicit, are allowed in the context of sex education as appropriate for the age of the students. A depiction is defined as any lifelike image, ranging from precise representations to verbal descriptions. Portrayal is a synonym of depiction, but includes playing a role on stage as one form of representation.

Certainly, you could argue the selfie – including the naked one – is the artwork of our time. It's estimated that over a million selfies are taken every day: self-portraiture meets self-promotion. We're more aware than ever not only of our own image, but our presentation of it – how we make ourselves appear to the eyes of the external spectator. And nowhere is that more carefully manipulated, surely, than in the nude snap. Freud is one of the greatest painters of the nude in recent years, and I think importantly, he’s also one of the best painters of the naked,” Paton says. Is there really a difference between the naked and the nude? According to art historian, Kenneth Clarke, there is. He said that while the nude is an idealised body that appears to be comfortable appearing unclothed, the naked is a body that has been exposed and deprived of clothing. The exhibition features examples of both, but Paton believes Freud’s work lies firmly in the naked camp. “He called many of his paintings naked portraits, and there’s a sense that he’s letting us know that the painting is telling a raw truth about what it is to be human and have a body,” he says. The Khajuraho temples contain sexual or erotic art on the external walls of the temple. Some of the sanctuaries have erotic statuettes both on the outside of the inner wall. A small amount of the carvings contain sexual themes and those seemingly do not depict deities but rather sexual activities between human individuals. The rest depict the everyday life. These carvings are possibly tantric sexual practices. [22]

The provocative photo of a nude prepubescent girl on the original cover of the Virgin Killer album by the Scorpions also brought controversy. Lewinski, Jorge (1987). Critic Lucy Lippard once wrote that Louise Bourgeois portrays bodies from within. “No matter what material she uses, her work always delivers an under-the-skin sensation,” Paton adds. “It brings home what vulnerable and fragile beings we are, while also conveying the amazing vitality and drive of the human animal.” This work in gouache and pencil on paper reduces the human body to its simplest form, with flashes of blue placing on emphasis on the reproductive organs. According to Paton, the thin, watered down appearance of the pink paint is also evocative of “the volatile fluids of life… It’s suggestive of life blood, a mother’s milk and even amniotic fluid,” he says. In Couple, it’s as if we’re looking right through the skin to the inside story about what makes the body thrive and survive – you don’t get much more nude than that. Photography has been used to create images of nudity that fit into any category; artistic, educational, commercial, and erotic.Adams, Steven (1994). The Barbizon School & the Origins of Impressionism. London: Phaidon Press. pp. 31–32, 103. ISBN 0-7418-2919-3. The emergence of the female nude as a genre begins with the Renaissance . An icon of the Italian Renaissance and one of the most renowned and universally loved paintings – Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli . During that period, depicting a woman in full nudity, except for Eve, was very innovative. The figure of the naked Venus in this work, who is born into the real world as a woman, is not chosen in terms of symbolism to emphasize the humility of the body, but to state the externalization of female eroticism, which combines idealism and sexuality.
