About this deal

Sadly, this volume almost seems to represent a “cleaning out the vault” effort by the remaining band members .

For any fan of Led Zeppelin this is an essential record of the band, for rock fans in general its also a stunning book to trace the life of a foursome who had no peers during their tour of duty 1968 through to 1980 when the death of drummer John Bonham signalled the end of Led Zeppelin. The book really is a treasure-trove of photos and should qualify as a “must have” for hardcore Zep fans. The band — Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John “Bonzo” Bonham — epitomized either the dreamy idealism of the ’60s or the bloated vapidity of the ’70s. The reader occasionally gets the impression that Spitz doesn’t particularly like Led Zeppelin’s music. I was so captivated that I used a roll-and-a-half of film on them and that was expensive for a school boy!

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Spitz, whose previous subjects include The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Ronald Reagan, knows he needn’t exaggerate the band’s abhorrent behavior, from drummer John Bonham’s blind-drunk sexual assaults to guitarist Jimmy Page’s petulant entitlement. Spitz is admirably unsparing, without being egregiously harsh, in his assessments of the attempts by White British musicians to approximate the sounds coming from imported, eagerly collected records by legends such as Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. The first 100 pages of the book chart Page’s life from his childhood through to becoming a budding musician and session professional.A well worn tale it is however, so a further retelling to the choir seemed to have required some significant insights to the canon, which it is difficult to say this provides. Offstage and performance photography, as well as images of rare memorabilia, bring the band’s story to vivid life. These stories would filter out from girls who'd supposedly been in my room when in fact they'd been in his.

So it’s these two things that are both essentially new to Zeppelin scholarship, and new to me as well despite having tackled the band before. That said, I admit that as a fan of Zep’s hey day, it was the naughty business written about in magazines that made their allure all the more powerful. The book is peppered with musical references that Spitz describes as evocatively as mere writing can describe music, and cultural references (at one point Spitz says that a manager of the Yardbirds had “his fingers in as many pies as Mrs. The band's heavy, guitar-driven sound has led them to be cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal. The Epic Leather and Metal Edition, measuring a huge 375mm square, bound in recycled Burgundy leather and supplied in a hand-made aluminium slipcase with a reproduction show poster.

Presented gorgeously as it is, solidarity is felt with many other reviewers on the point that a bit more in the way of reading material would have certainly increased satisfaction, not to mention intrinsic value.
