About this deal
How did we come across Pugnane? There is a Cantina Communale in Castiglione Falletto run by Alan Tardi, a New Yorker who settled here ages ago. It’s a great place to do some research and, following our trawl of Alan’s shelves, Pugnane was top of our shopping list.
His Dolcettos are impressive – possibly the finest we have tasted. That said, special mention must also be made of a 1992 Dolcetto d’Alba that Elio Altare served with a dinner of fresh porcini, but that’s another story. He also described it as a very “balanced” growing season, that was neither too hot nor too cold, comparing it to 2022. Meet Alessandro (Sandro) Barosi who makes (among other things) wonderful Dogliani – very fancy Dolcetto. We have been eyeing up his wines since we first met eight years ago at a biodynamic wine tasting in Paris. Looking over the lineup of six wines selected to be tasted, each of which was a Gavi di Gavi made by Broglia from 100% Cortese, Broglia said: “Gavi di Gavi has high total acidity, which is great for two things: making bubbles, and age-worthy whites.” The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released."

With our not-very-fluent Italian, communication has usually relied on warm goodwill here. Vittoria, now 28, has been working alongside Gianfranco in the cellar for a few years and has been studying English. Marta, now 23, has finished her studies in nearby Alba, made some wines with her college friends and is now also working in the family Cantina. script>
Though known for its highly popular fresh, young wines, Gavi DOCG is also capable of producing bottles that benefit from time in the cellar. This response includes antibody-producing B cells, as well as T cells, which seek out and destroy infected cells. T cells do this by examining the repertoire of proteins expressed on the surfaces of cells. They have been trained to recognise the body’s own proteins as ‘self’, so if they notice a foreign protein, such as an antigen from the pathogen, they will mount an immune response against the cell carrying it. Such “anti-vector immunity” also makes delivering a second dose of the vaccine challenging, assuming this is needed, unless this second dose is delivered using a different virus vector. How easy are they to manufacture? Turns out he was right. It was jaw-dropping – certainly one of the best Barolos we had ever tasted. Old-fashioned but without the faults you could occasionally come across in earlier decades. We were hooked. So we made our advances and hurried over again as soon as Christmas was done with. Broglia also does not use oak (“we like to underline the best attributes of Gavi di Gavi,” noted Broglia, “oak would standardise Cortese”), becoming an early adopter of stainless steel tanks in the 1980s. As for the younger vintages tasted, Broglia cited the origins of the wine’s popularity and Genoa and suggested that they were “born to be paired with seafood”, such as spaghetti alle vongole.
The international success of Gavi should not be understated: according to the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi, of the approximately 13 million bottles of these Cortese-based white wines from south-eastern Piemonte, a staggering 85% are exported, with the UK, US, Germany and Japan being key markets. We were brought to Osvaldo’s door by his fabulous Barolo Serra dei Turchi 2001. His house is in a small cluster of farm buildings on a small ridge between Alba and the hilltop village of La Morra called “Serra dei Turchi”. There was a Turkish encampment on this ridge centuries ago. We love the handmade quality of his wines.Of course, as with everything, there is an upper limit when time stops giving qualities to the wine and starts taking them away. Broglia shared that the oldest vintage of the estate’s Gavi di Gavi he had tasted was a “fantastic” 1980, suggesting that it may be some time before the wines from this tasting hit an ageing ceiling. Like Burgundy, there is a clear definition of styles from township to township; Monforte – powerful, tough. La Morra – elegant, perfumed. Serralunga – sleek minerality and poise. Barolo – power and perfume. Also a “cru” system has taken increasing hold over the past few years with “cru” vineyards such as “Cannubi”, “Arborina” and “Rocche” specified on the label. These are considered a higher level than straight village Barolo – and equivalent to 1er cru status. Mauro Sebaste says the “cru” is now more important than the old fashioned Riserva system.
