About this deal

Amicable Exes: Of a strange sort with Ridcully. They get on well enough, and it's indicated that he's still holding a torch for her. I Know Kung Fu: She studied up on it for the spiritual stuff, but during Witches Abroad she manages to put the practical to good use in escaping a ball room. Better known as Long Tall Short Fat Sally, Miss Cambric is one of the witches who accompanies Mrs. Proust to the Chalk. She suffers from tides; her body expands and contracts with the moon's influence. She is being trained by Mrs. Happenstance. Her expanding and shrinking tendencies were very helpful in The Shepherd's Crown, where she was able to inflate and fall on fairies, thereby crushing them. Establishing Character Moment: The first time we see him in Wyrd Sisters nicely sums him up. He's playing cards with the castle's cook and happens to give a very insightful and concise definition of the word "Zen" that totally flies over the cook's head. Just as the cook starts to grow suspicious, he makes a stupid joke and then, just to be safe, loses the next several hands. Verence likes to keep his head down and avoid conflict whenever possible, but he's also far more intelligent and cunning than he seems to be at first glance. Hidden Depths: Terry Pratchett has hinted that she may be more powerful than Granny. This is rarely noticeable, but briefly comes up in Maskerade.

A fairy godmother, mentioned in The Wee Free Men and named in the court transcript in The Illustrated Wee Free Men. She gave Princess Sandy the traditional gifts of health, wealth and happiness, only to be sued by the princess when she didn't feel very happy. Nettle solved this problem by turning the princess into a mirror and her lawyer into a toad.Weak, but Skilled: While she's actually the most powerful witch on the Disc, she's usually Willfully Weak and therefore comes off this way, using what magic she has sparingly and in the most economic fashion possible. Wide-Eyed Idealist: Debuts as this, and though she slowly learns the ways of the world and gets harder and tougher she still believes in making things better for people. Many witches, especially in the Ramtops, have steadings; geographical areas and populations that they're responsible for. It is unclear how steadings are defined; Tiffany has the entire Chalk as a steading, while other witches have only two or three villages. Steadings are not necessarily passed on to the apprentice of the witch who previously watched over the steading. There does seem to be a particular geography to it; a discussion of the older witches dying off leads reluctantly to discussing a redrawing of territorial boundaries, which is getting more difficult to handle as there are fewer young girls becoming witches than there are older witches dying.

When she is drunk or bathing, Nanny sings bawdy songs such as "The Hedgehog Can Never Be Buggered At All" or "The Hedgehog Song" Only a few lines appear in the Discworld books, but many readers have written their versions. [2] Another Nanny Ogg song is "A Wizard's Staff has a Knob on the End", a version of which has been written by Heather Wood, with music by Dave Greenslade. It is also notable that Nanny Ogg once gave Agnes Nitt lessons on how to sing, including how to sing in harmony with herself (using her alter ego, Perdita). Agnes makes a brief appearance in The Sea and Little Fishes, where her voice is complimented during the Lancre Witch Trials by Mistress Clarity Shimmy: " That's a good cursin' voice she's got there. You know you've been cursed with a voice like that." She is also called by Nanny to help her take Granny home when Letice Earwig accuses Granny about her good behavior. At Granny's cottage, Agnes voices her own dislike of Letice Earwig before leaving with Nanny. Weight Woe: She struggles a lot with this trope, particularly in Maskerade. A bit of a Deconstruction, though, as a large part of her personality is how annoying she finds the stereotype and how hard she works on avoiding it.Granny Weatherwax has striking blue eyes and a penetrating gaze, a hooked nose, and a determined set to her jaw. In Equal Rites she is described as "handsome", having an excellent complexion, no warts, and all her teeth, although it is implied she finds this a bit inappropriate for a witch. Granny is thin, mentioning in Lords and Ladies that she weighs 9 stone (130lb), and is described as being taller than Nanny Ogg and Magrat. I Was Quite a Looker: Though she never really brings it up herself, it is noted that as a young woman she was, at the very least, striking. Certainly enough to catch Ridcully's eye - though she was never the romantic type. Even as an old woman, she's considered quite handsome, in a hard-edged sort of way. Concerning the pronunciation, Terry Pratchett is quoted to have said: "Magrat is pronounced Magg-rat. Doesn't matter what I think is right – everyone I've heard pronounce it has pronounced it Maggrat." The Perdita persona leaves Agnes in two minds about everything. The first mind is herself, good-natured and sensible Agnes; the second is dramatic and rebellious Perdita. It is said that inside every fat girl, there is a thin girl waiting to get out (and a lot of chocolate)—according to Perdita, she is that girl. The Perdita personality usually manifests itself only as part of Agnes's internal dialogue, often in the form of sarcastic remarks (as though her 'Second Thoughts' have taken on a life of their own). Yet Perdita is capable of taking real action in emergency situations. O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In The Sea and Little Fishes. Everyone can deal with Granny being nasty. When she tries being nice, everyone breaks down. It turns out to be invoked as a Paranoia Gambit.
