I stare holes into my notecards. I pretend not to see him coming. Pretend I don’t notice when he’s standing right next to me. video width="1920" height="1080" mp4="https://erinstewartbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/WordsWeKeep_Trailer.mp4" poster="https://erinstewartbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Screen-Shot-2022-01-19-at-12.25.05-PM.png"][/video]

The Words We Keep by Erin Stewart’s story follows high school junior Lily Larkin, who is desperately trying to hold things together for her family three months after her older sister Alice’s traumatic suicide attempt. Lily is partnered with Micah Mendez, a new student at school who knows all about Alice’s experience, and together they embark on an art project for schoolErin Stewart is a writer and editor. She graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has a degree from Brigham Young University. Erin is also a weekly columnist in Salt Lake City. She lives in Utah with her husband and three children and is represented by literary agent Rebecca Sherman of Writers House. The Words We Keep Main Characters Keep it in your pants, Damon,” I say, trying my level best to act like I’m not bothered by the boy in the corner. But the knot has completely taken over my abdomen now and is radiating waves of panic toward my chest. Even if it was the same center, he wouldn’t say anything.

this is probably going to be the only time i write a serious review about a book without any sarcastic undertones. Lily realizes that it’s the words she’s been swallowing that desperately want to break through. The novel explores mental illness, familial love, and finding your voice in a tender and heartfelt way that is sure to resonate with readers. Gorgeous and deeply touching.' – Kathleen Glasgow, New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Pieces and You'd Be Home Now Dad falls to his knees, and he’s hugging us, so tight I almost pop, and we’re huddled on the beach, and he’s crying, and I think they’re happy tears, but it’s hard to tell. I also liked Micah. He inspired others in very special ways and made them see that they were shining stars in the dark. He is the one who made this story thrive.

But there is no lightning bolt of insanity. It’s more like a drizzling leak you don’t even notice until you’re gasping for air, suddenly and irrevocably aware that you’ve drowned in your own thoughts. Books that deal with heavy subjects, such as mental health, are books that I gravitate towards. They bring out so many emotions and let us all know that we aren’t alone in this world. That we are loved and belong on this planet. Anyways i also love how poetry is such a big part of the book! I’ve always loved reading poetry and i even like to write, i’m just not that good. I also relate a lot to every single poem. Enter Micah, a new student at school with a past of his own. He was in treatment with Alice and seems determined to get Lily to process not only Alice’s experience, but her own. Because Lily has secrets, too. Compulsions she can’t seem to let go of and thoughts she can’t drown out.

Who?” Kali asks, a singsongy lilt in her voice because OMG! It’s Damon! who she’s been in love with since fifth grade. She’s never forgiven me for the regrettable month freshman year when I dated him, mostly because I believed that beneath his assholery, there was a boy worth liking. despite it being fiction, this book is the realest story ive ever read. it’s heartbreaking and healing. it is what mental illness is for so many of us every single day of our lives. the uncertainty of whether or not tomorrow will be a day that we can get through but also the uncertainty that the light we sometimes see might not still be there tomorrow. Other secondary characters in the book include Lily and Alice’s father and step-mother, Lily’s friends and classmates, and Micah’s mother The Words We Keep Summary Read Online Raw, freeing, poetic, and deeply touching, Erin Stewart dives deep into the waves of mental health and the impact the stigma surrounding it has on those desperate to be heard, but silenced by fear, shame, and the reception of their peers. Stewart is brutal and honest, their words stemming from a place all too familiar and relatable for many. Lily. Initially likable, becomes more narcissistic throughout the story, focused only on herself and forgetting that she’s not the only person in her life. She lies to her best friend about things that she could have been truthful. Lily is careless with others’ feelings and generally doesn’t consider others have difficult *stuff* in their lives. I understood that she was overwhelmed, emotionally neglected by her only living parent and new stepmom and dealing with her own worries about mental health. Of course, she’s the MOST creative, talented poet, a superstar who doesn’t want others to know her struggles. I’m very glad Stewart didn’t write Lily as the perfect sister and I don’t need likable narrators, I wish she was a little less manic pixie girl. Okay, a lot less. For all anyone knows, my big sister is still off at college, living in her dorm, staying out too late on weekends. I never mention that she came home a few weeks into freshman year, got into bed, and never got up again. That is, until the Night of the Bathroom floor. It’s been two months since the Night on the Bathroom Floor – when Lily found her sister, Alice, hurting herself. Now Alice is coming home after treatment and it’s getting harder for Lily to outrun the compulsive thoughts she's having. I mean yeah there are a few flaws, like how it’s pretty cringy since it’s a YA book but i don’t mind! The amazingness of the book compensates for it! The characters are so deep and i just relate to Lily (the fmc) so much. She is me, I am her. Go away, I say. But my voice is tiny and no match for monsters.” (an excerpt from the poem Monsters) p.155 The Words We Keep wasn’t that great of a story and I found myself bored. It contained so many clichés that it wasn’t an original story. There were some points of light in there but you have to read a lot before you find them. This book wasn’t for me but I can see others really enjoying this one.
