About this deal

In terms of use cases, Syrp notes that the Genie Micro can be used to capture holy grail time lapse videos. You can easily adjust ramp exposure settings on your camera as conditions change without the risk of jostling or moving your camera. You can also control multiple cameras by using more than one Genie Micro. Amid a pandemic, it may also be useful to remotely control a camera for portraits or video, allowing you to maintain a safe distance from others.

Now that we’ve laid out the groundwork for creating motion-controlled content, let’s talk about why you might want to choose the Syrp Genie II system for your work. In short, there are a lot of advantages, and the disadvantages we noticed are mostly related to “the nature of the beast” when it comes to motion control, and not specific to the Genie system itself. So, let’s get started! Easy Operation The Genie mini enables beautiful HDR time-lapse, giving your footage a stand-out effect by allowing for greater dynamic range in your final video. Available in both Time-lapse and Panorama modes. Make sure you are running the most recent App on Genie Mini. ios version 1.3.8 and Android version 1.1.0. Another thing I’m really keen to try out is setting up my slider at a 45 o angle so my time-lapse can run horizontally and vertically too creating two types of moment – as I said, the possibilities are endless with the Genie!Shoot stunning Panoramas and 360 photos. Setup is simple and easy with the Syrp App, specify the amount of overlap, number of photos and movement right up to 360 degrees. Lastly, you can also add more accessories that suit specialized needs, such as a product turntable, a Tilt Platform so that you can easily do 3-axis motion with your slider at any angle. Syrp Genie II Pan Tilt Linear Demo Reel: Video & Timelapse Footage In video mode the Genie Mini moves at a perfectly smooth continuous speed for accurate panning moves. Lastly, you can go ahead and mount your camera on the Pan/Tilt, via the provided plate. (It’s not Arca-Swiss, by the way; it’s the other fore-aft plate style…) Step 4) Set Keyframes On that note, let’s get into our review, and tell you what we liked, what we didn’t like, and whether or not this system is right for you! Syrp Genie II Review – Specifications

Then, you’re pretty much ready to go! Of course, if you’re ready for something really advanced, the multi-axis keyframing is pretty easy to set up, too, or, you can also adjust the “ease in/out” settings, (ramping) in case you want any of the Genie’s 3 motions to start or stop very gradually. Step 5) Hit Record! The linear motion (from left to right) took a lot longer to set up, but I instantly loved the results. I just love the smooth motion and it’s exactly what I was looking. Ramp the i’n’ and ‘out’ points of your movement in both time-lapse and video mode to achieve smooth eased movement control. Using the Genie on a slider is a little more difficult as the cords have to be pulled tight, but not too tight otherwise the Genie won’t thread through the cord. Also, setting up the cords can be a little fiddly at first.Wireless setup of any system, compared to a hard-wired one, always has an element of connectivity snafus from time to time. Generally, the Syrp Genie II setup is amazingly reliable, as we said, however in some rare instances you can make the devices “unhappy” with you and the mobile app. The form factor of the device is incredibly compact, slotting into a regular camera bag with ease and is capable of full 180° degrees of tilting motion and 360° degrees pan. Genie II Linear is a highly portable and versatile solution for motion control. Our unique Genie rope system can attach to any slider on the market, giving you precise linear motion control up to 100m in length.

Beyond these simple controls, the Genie Micro can also be used to stop and start video cameras, utilize remote triggering to capture images for a time lapse or stop motion video. The Genie Micro also has functions for setting up HDR shots. I’d old school and I’ve always used an intervalometer for my time-lapses. It’s only been in the past year or so that I’ve switched to Magic Lantern (an internal intervalometer than you can install onto your SD card), and I love how easy that is to use. Well the Syrp Genie beats the lot.

How to take your time-lapse photography to the next level

The very first time I set up the entire rig, I didn’t need to read any instructions at all. It was completely self-explanatory, from how all the different parts go together, to the dialing in of keyframes on the app.

Interface: USB Port – Charging | Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy – Connect to Syrp Genie App | Camera Port 2.5mm | Accessory Port 3.5mm Always set your camera / lens to Manual Focus (MF) not Auto Focus (AF). In Auto Focus mode the camera will try and find an Auto Focus (AF) point and if it can’t, the camera will not fire. IMAGE REVIEW OFF. When it comes to my videos I always like to introduce an element of movement into all my shots. I find this is much more immersive for the viewer; it almost puts you into that moment, so I wanted to introducing movement into my time-lapses too. I’ve been reviewing Syrp products since their original Genie hit the market many years ago, which we reviewed here. I’ve always found that they are built to a very high standard. In a market where new unknown companies pop up often and have poor or questionable quality products that could likely break in just a few months, it is great to count on quality brands such as Syrp to deliver durably-built gear for those who do serious work. We’ve also concluded that if you’re among those video or timelapse creators who do want or need motorized motion control, the Syrp Genie II 3-axis kit is one of the most simple, user-friendly systems available, and very much worth the investment.
