About this deal

Afterlife absolutely nails its opening prologue, and really lives or dies depending on whether you get on board with that gambit, starting a through-line of posthumous justice for its departed cast member which is absolutely the strongest element of this entire sequel. Managing to gift this new entry a fabulously dark tone - despite its later hijinks (and frankly awful cover art) - if you're not sold on Afterlife after the first few minutes, you never will be. Following on that aforementioned 2016 film, most anything with a pulse and the Ghostbusters name on it would be an upgrade. This is an NEW: “ Ghostbusters: Behind Closed Doors” Documentary – a 90-minute documentary about the making of Ghostbusters and the history of the franchise!

tasteful ways. The picture refuses to dabble, never mind swim, in nonsensical stabs at needless humor. That is not to say the film is humorless, but I liked the nostalgic homage to the story from the original film as well as the handling of the sentimental connection to Spengler (the late Harold Ramis’ character). Ghostbusters: Afterlife doesn’t have the entertaining narrative, witty edge, marvelous chemistry, and timeless appeal of the original but, I had fun with its host of references, interspersed cameos, and surface level gags/humor/banter. As a Ghostbusters fan I enjoyed revisiting the themes here and, was truly moved by the inclusion/tribute to Egon/Harold Ramis. This is definitely one that I will have fun watching again. Ghostbusters: Afterlife comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 channel sound.

Conclusion

For its presentation in Ultra HD, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was rendered from a 4.5K source and finished on a 4K DI. In listening to the Dolby Atmos mix I found it to be of the active variety that made steady use of the platform. Its use of sounds placed above is a mix of atmospherics and discrete effects. This is done well and creates an appreciable level of immersion when applied. Over the course of the film there are various sequences (such as the one where Phoebe and Podcast encounter the blue ghost/blob in the abandoned factory, followed by the chase through town) where environmental sounds, music cues and discrete objects are mixed to differing locations in the sound field, adding a head turning element to the viewing experience. cognizant to build on that success rather than supplant it or, worse redefine it. It’s a far cry from the 2016 version which seemed to try to make more of a statement than an entertaining film. If you could change the locale of the original film and move it to the mid-west, this is most likely what you’d get.
