About this deal

While elderberry has shown promising results in the lab, research in humans and animals is still limited. Generally, consuming it in the diet has only a small effect on antioxidant status ( 19). According to the Ancient Greeks, anise aids in breathing, relieves pain, helps urination, and eases thirst. However, it’s best known for its digestive qualities. A well-known carminative, it settles the digestive tract, decreases bloating, and reduces flatulence. The berries are quite tart and need to be cooked to be eaten. The flowers have a delicate muscat aroma and can be eaten raw or cooked ( 1). Elderberry fruits, leaves, and flowers are strong antioxidants. However, their protective effects on humans appear to be insignificant. Additionally, the processing of the berries and flowers can reduce their antioxidant activity. May be good for heart health

Add both the sambuca and Grand Marnier into a warm, large espresso cup and swirl it until it’s mixed and evenly coating the inside. Top it up with the coffee and gently stir it. Simply add one to three coffee beans to a shot of sambuca and set it alight. Let the flame gently roast the coffee bean and caramelised it with the sambuca’s sugars. Afterwards, simply sip it an enjoy. If you catch a coffee bean, bite into it for some additional flavour. As mentioned above the flies were flambéd when they invaded the old ladies glass. Occasionally, sambuca is set on fire with the intention of toasting and slightly caramelising the coffee beans. Typically, sambuca’s ingredients consist of the alcohol, star anise, and sugar. Occasionally, green anise is used instead. Additionally, sambuca may also include other botanicals including elderflower, fennel, and liquorice. Sambuca is also used in cooking, in small amounts because it has a strong flavor. It is usually used in desserts and seafood recipes.

Often referred to a “sambuca fly”, a shot of the alcoholic spirit may be served with a roasted coffee bean in the glass, which is chewed when drinking. In Italy, this practice is referred to as “sambuca con la mosca” or “sambuca with the fly”.

May support the immune system. In rats, elderberry polyphenols were found to support immune defense by increasing the number of white blood cells ( 30). While these results are interesting, further research is needed in humans to determine if the effects are truly significant. The bark, unripe berries, and seeds contain small amounts of substances known as lectins, which can cause stomach problems if too much is eaten ( 2).Find sources: "Sambuca"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( February 2012) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) Historically, the flowers and leaves have been used for pain relief, swelling, inflammation, stimulating the production of urine, and inducing sweating. The bark was used as a diuretic, a laxative, and to induce vomiting ( 1). Further large-scale studies are required to confirm these results and determine if elderberry may also play a role in preventing influenza ( 9). Thoroughly squeeze the lemon into a mixing glass, add the sambuca, and stir the ingredients. Pour into a Highball or Collins glass pre-filled with ice and top up with the water to taste. If it’s a little sour, you can add sugar but this is best done beforehand so it has fully dissolved. Firstly, Greek ouzo is typically served as an apéritif before a meal whereas Italian sambuca is often enjoyed as a digestif as we explain below. Additionally, ouzo is almost always served with ice-cold water.
