The worldwide popularity and playing of the game of Quidditch was closely monitored and analysed by the International Confederation of Wizards' Quidditch Committee. [1] In the first novel, a Slytherin student named Terence Higgs played as Seeker, and then a year later, he becomes replaced. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry’s rival Draco Malfoy becomes Seeker on the Quidditch team for Slytherin. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a student named Harper acts as the reserve Seeker and later replaces Draco.
Making Golden Snitches was a very complicated process as it had to be handled with gloves only. Snitches had flesh memory, making it necessary to use a new Golden Snitch for every match. Even the makers of the Snitch wore gloves to prevent touching the Snitch. Harry doesn’t play in this match due to injuries sustained during his confrontation with Quirrell and Voldemort. We don’t see the match in the book so we don’t have any details except that Gryffindor suffered their “worst defeat in a century”. Analysis Gryffindor calls timeout to regroup. Harry tells Fred and George to protect the rest of the team and that he’ll avoid the Bludger on his own. The other players try to convince Wood to stop the match and ask for an inquiry, but Harry objects. Wood sides with Harry and when play resumes, Harry is left to fend off the Bludger alone. The Snitch ruins Quidditch. It’s an absolutely pointless game mechanic that’s only in the books to make Harry look good. Oh, Harry, you’re so fast on that broom, you were able to catch the Snitch before that mean old Slytherin! You won the game singlehandedly, Harry Potter, gosh gee aren’t you just the bees knees! The Ancient Egyptians believed gold to be divine and indestructible. In modern folklore, it is the prized possession of every dragon. In its purest form, gold means truth and honesty, but also greed, control, shallow needs and extravagance. In Harry Potter, the theme of gold runs deep, right down to the wizarding currency, and the glimmer of a Golden Snitch.The fact that some of the fouls are so specific suggests that the behaviour during the 1473 Quidditch World Cup was so egregious that new fouls were created specifically to cover everything that happened.
Furthermore, according to the rules of the game, the Golden Snitch can only be caught by the seeker of either team and it marks the final moment of a game as catching the Snitch declares the end of the game. Harry Potter is strongly associated with the Golden Snitch for several reasons. Most importantly, he proved his abilities as a skilled Quidditch seeker when he caught the Snitch with his mouth in his first-ever game. Furthermore, he was given the same Snitch which contained a Deathly Hallow inside it by Dumbledore. Just moments after regaining control of his broom Harry dives toward the ground and miraculously catches the Snitch by nearly swallowing it. Gryffindor wins 170 to 60. It carries an enchantment by which it can identify the first human to lay hands upon it, in the case of disputed capture." — Description of a Flesh Memory [src] The Golden Snitch first appeared in the Harry Potter series in Harry Potterand the Philosopher’s Stonewhen Oliver Wood, the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team introduced Harry to the game of Quidditch at the Hogwarts Quidditch grounds. He first presents all the balls used in a Quidditch game, starting with the Quaffle and then the Bludger. Finally, he unveils the Golden Snitch and tells Harry that this is the ball that Harry, as the Seeker must be paying attention to. A witch named Modesty Rabnott, who was also watching the game, took pity on the Snidget and rescued it with a Summoning Charm before rushing away with it hidden inside her robes. She was caught by a furious Bragge and fined ten Galleons for disrupting the game, but not before she had released the Snidget. This saved the life of this bird, but the connection with Quidditch had been made, and soon a Snidget was being released at every game. From then, each team had an extra player — originally called the Hunter, later the Seeker — whose sole job was to catch and kill the Snidget, for which one-hundred and fifty points were awarded in memory of the one-hundred and fifty Galleons offered by Bragge in the original game. Golden Snitches In The Real World
The three hooped goal posts were originally barrel-goals, introduced during Goodwin Kneen's time. At the time of the introduction of the scoring area, they were replaced by baskets on stilts, but whilst these were practical, they did carry an inherent problem: there was no size restriction on the baskets, which differed dramatically from pitch to pitch. [1] Like Adrian Pucey, he appeared to be one of the more decent Slytherin players, as he seemed to play by the rules of Quidditch and did not resort to cheating. [1] Fans could buy a wide range of team merchandise including hats, scarves, flags, jerseys, badges and figurines. [4] Behind the scenes [ ] As we mentioned previously, the Golden Snitch wasn’t always the small, walnut-sized ball found in modern Quidditch games. The Golden Snitch, as we know it today, was based on a design of an actual bird.
Terence Higgs was portrayed by British actor Will Theakston, with the credits incorrectly stating he was played by Scot Fearn. Fearn's name was also misspelled as Fern. Quidditch makes use of three balls – the Quaffle, which is used by the chasers to score goals by throwing them through the opponent team’s hoops, which fetches the team 10 points. The second ball, called the Bludger is used by the beaters of the team to aim at the players of the opponent teams to distract and impede during the match. The Snitch as described above carries 150 points and is used to end the match when caught by the seeker of one of the playing teams. During the match, the Snitch was sighted fairly early on by both Harry Potter and Terence Higgs. Harry was almost able to catch it, however, he was fouled by Marcus Flint before he could get close enough, and the Snitch vanished in the confusion. [1]After placing the Golden Snitch to his mouth, Harry said, “ I am about to die,” and the Snitch opened. On the outside of the Golden Snitch, letters formed, and there was an inscription reading, “ I open at the close“. Dumbledore had successfully enchanted the Golden Snitch to house the Resurrection Stone. The Inter-House Quidditch Cup was a championship that took the form of a mini-league at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each house team played each other throughout the course of the school year. This resulted in three games for each team, and six games of Quidditch for the school to enjoy overall. Final standings in the competition were based on the total amount of points won over all matches played, rather than the number of victories. It was entirely possible for one team to lose to another, but still claim the Cup if their points from previous games had been high enough.
Porskoff Ploy: One Chaser flies upward, and then throws the Quaffle down to another Chaser directly below. The sport of Quidditch got its name from Queerditch Marsh, the location of the first ever recorded game. A witch by the name of Gertie Keddle lived on the edge of the marsh around the year 1050 and recorded what she saw in a diary that survives to this day. Successive entries in her journal show the evolution of the game and how each element was introduced. [1] The Snitch actually contained the Resurrection Stone from the Peverell Ring, one of the Deathly Hallows, and Harry was only able to open the Snitch and use the Stone to summon dead spirits of his loved ones as he prepared to face Voldemort and die to protect his friends. [2]Long before the Golden Snitches were created for the purpose of Quidditch, there existed bird a called a Golden Snidget that was thrown into the air before the Quidditch match began. Early Quidditch rules required the seeker of either team to catch this bird for the game to end.
