About this deal

But he has learned the Masonic counterpart of the truth which a modern poet has sought to apply to human life and to human aspirations as a whole:

When designing a staircase, the total height is divided among the risers, while the distance is distributed among the tread. The relationship between these will give the slope of the staircase. Here’s a photo of the string with it’s step and riser housings routed.Note the joint with the newel post using dowels and coach screw bolts. However, to maintain a smooth flow on the winders around the newels the stringers have been slightly modified by adding a curved triangle at their assembly point with the newels to accommodate the extra winders. Note that for someone who’s not used to building stairs understanding the mark up process is the only way to fully understand how to build winder stairs. Here’s a beautiful first time stair hand made by Bernard of Chalon in France. Bernard has used StairDesigner with our StairFile service to design the winder stair.

This modification was drawn directly onto the StairDesigner DXF plan and can be seen in red in the drawing below. Between stays in Canada, Spain, Alsace, and my golf competitions, I’ve been working on my stairwell and built my stair. The main advantage of a winder staircase is saving space. This is because the spaces with the turn also require less length to cover the same distance for ascending and descending. It is also a very versatile staircase from practical and aesthetic points of view. Chateau Tirecul-la-Graviere Cuvee Madame 500ml 1998 Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion Monbazillac France 300However, they’re pretty plain and don’t offer a grand design like a winding or bifurcated staircase. as it were, within the door of the Temple. Like the child, and like primitive man, he must be content for the moment with imperfect knowledge and limited skill. In these turns, the extra steps are located where other types of stairs would have a landing. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a winder staircase? The downside to this is it’s not all that grand of a staircase. For instance, you don’t get a view of the lower area as you descent like you do with a winding or bifurcated staircase.

The winding design is synonymous with grand. Any time curves are involved it’s a more complex design so not only is the staircase curved, but so too is the wall it lies up against. Note the drawings of mine below. Read the captions for a full understanding of how to build the winder stairs. Building codes mandate stairs should be at least 36 inches wide. This width is great for three winders to make a turn of 90 degrees. Bifurcated is synonymous with a luxury staircase. It takes up the most space and makes for a grand entrance. It’s an imposing design for sure. This type would look silly in a small space so only consider it if you have a large foyer that fits it adequately.

The plans in DXF and the ordinate dimensioning has been a real life saver. I hardly had any adjustment to do when putting the stair together. One of the benefits of a spiral staircase lies within its ability to create light and space. This makes a lot of people reluctant when renovating spiral staircases, as they don’t want to lose that light and space. However, this can be replicated with a kite-winding staircase. With a touch of imagination, the right materials and a bit of technical know-how, you can create a unique kite-winding staircase that maximises light in your home. In this instance, a glass staircase can work brilliantly. Glass sliders or treads will easily create the illusion of space and the effect of light cascading through your hallway. Plus, it’s a lot safer and easier to manoeuvre than a traditional spiral staircase. We call that a win-win situation!

Winder stairs are permitted in the building code as of 2019. The code says the minimum tread width on the inside radius needs to be 6 inches. It also says that the tread depth at walk line of the stairs measured 12 inches in from the inside tread edge must be no less than 10 inches. The Winders in the Video Do NOT Meet the Above Code Requirement - Why? The stairs must have a minimum finished width of 36″. This measurement is taken above the handrail and below the headroom. For our purposes, make sure there is a minimum of 37″ between the framed walls. The three- quarter turn staircase is an elaborate design. You need quite a bit of space to build such a design. It include multiple landings and is usually in homes with above-average ceiling height. It wouldn’t look too good to cram all that under an 8 foot ceiling. The spiral design is a great for a secondary staircase. It’s a space-saving design and actually looks cool. If the original board is right angled it’s easy to just leave the tape measure on one edge and mark off all the X dimensions, move it to the next edge and mark off all the Y dimensions. This means each winder stair creates a 30-degree angle. The center of the winder tread is always going to be greater than 10 inches if the stairs are 36 inches wide. This is plenty safe. Is it Hard to Make Winder Stairs? Slide the next winder (kite shaped) into the stringer (ensure you have the correct one as they will be different), ensure the tread lines up with the riser housing. Now dry fit the next staircase run into both the newel and string mortice slot to ensure the corner tread fits into this adjacent stringer, using a square make sure the stringers are 90° to each other. Now you are happy with how the tread fits we can secure it into place.
