Explore propaganda from the era - eg propaganda posters or short films. Encourage pupils to think about how we receive information today, and why the government at the time used posters as the main way of communicating information to people during the war years. Following this, pupils could design and make their own propaganda posters. These could then be added to the historical display that they have created. Supporting resources can be found here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/government-posters/ So far in this book it has been rather interesting, and it makes me want to read more. Pupils will encounter language with which they may not be familiar in this text. For example, language relating to warfare, or language that may have dropped out of common usage or that is part of a regional dialect. The class could dedicate a section of a working wall to collecting examples of vocabulary used in the narrative with which they are unfamiliar. They can look up the definitions online or in a dictionary and this could provide a starting point to explore the morphology and etymology of certain words. Consider screen adaptations of the book and compare and contrast different ways of presenting the same story. Angels and Heroes The Story of a Machine Gunner with the Royal Irish Fusiliers August 1914 to April 1915 My grandfather prompted me to read this book when I was about 11 and I thought that it was absolutely brilliant. On all the times I've read it since, it has lost none of it's original lustre and, if possible, has got even better now that I understand everything better. The Machine Gunners, published in 1975, was the first novel written by English childrens and Young Adult author, Robert Westall. Based on his own experiences as a child in Tynemouth during The Blitz, the book is the story of Charles "Chas" McGill, a young schoolboy who collects 'war souvenirs'; pieces of fallen bomb, shrapnel from Anti-Aircraft fire, and other detritus of the bombings.Just Plane Wrong: The 1983 TV adaptation changed the downed German bomber from a Heinkel He 111 to a Junkers Ju 52. Shame that the Ju 52 was only used as a bomber during the 1939 invasion of Poland and was being exclusively used as a transport plane by 1941. The adventures start in Garmouth, a town in England, when Chas finds a machine gun from a dead German bomber. The story is excitingly fast and fun, but more than that, it can teach you a lot. On one level this is an exciting story of how a group of children overcome all kinds of difficulties to pursue their project. Chas and his chosen friends build a warren of air-raid shelters connected by tunnels, with a machine-gun emplacement, in the derelict garden of a bombed-out house. Apart from dealing with suspicious parents and the class bully, the children also deflect the interest of the police and the Home Guard, who would like to recover the machine-gun, if only they could find it.

His first published book The Machine Gunners (1975) which won him the Carnegie Medal is set in World War Two when a group of children living on Tyneside retrieve a machine-gun from a crashed German aircraft. He won the Carnegie Medal again in 1981 for The Scarecrows, the first writer to win it twice. He won the Smarties Prize in 1989 for Blitzcat and the Guardian Award in 1990 for The Kingdom by the Sea. Robert Westall's books have been published in 21 different countries and in 18 different languages, including Braille. But, at the same time, you would have to admit it made an impact, left a mark, spoke to the young me in ways I probably couldn't quite understand. At some point something reminded me of The Machine Gunners, a book I read when I was about 10 and - if my failing memory is to be trusted - thoroughly enjoyed.
