Elin Wägner (1892–1949): feminist, suffragist, pacifist and environmentalist, Wägner was the author of a prodigious amount of journalism, political pamphlets and prose fiction as well as an acclaimed biography of Selma Lagerlöf (see above!). The edited volume Re-Writing the Script: Gender and Community in Elin Wägner shows how Wägner’s texts outlined bold alternatives to the Swedish welfare state, and how her combined focus on gender and environmentalism anticipated much more recent ecocritical works. The title of her novel Penwoman, about the Swedish women’s suffrage movement, speaks for itself and applies to all the other guests at this soirée. Karin Boye is perhaps most famous for her poems, of which the most well-known ought to be "Yes, of course it hurts" (Sw. "Ja visst gör det ont") and "In motion" (Sw. "I rörelse") from her collections of poems "The Hearths" (Sw. "Härdarna"), 1927, and "For the sake of the tree" (Sw. "För trädets skull"), 1935. She was also a member of the Swedish literary institution Samfundet De Nio (chair number 6) from 1931 until her death in 1941. After Karin Boye had portrayed her own break with contemporary norms regarding female roles and sexual laws her submission in the 1935 poetry collection called För trädets skull reveals a new freedom. By referring to patterns of ancient religious fertility rites she sought, as a poet, to release the song of the new humanity following the death of its older version. However, the reception this modernist poetry collection received was influenced by the same male perspectives and 1800s-era criteria which had been applied to her earlier work. In a way, it seems to help her resolve (to some extent) some of her other issues, such as her religious faith, but it also leaves her further unmoored.

Initially, I wanted to read Crisis because it was mentioned and briefly discussed in the Swedish Netflix show Young Royals. For those expecting a sapphic romance novel: Crisis is not what you are looking for. Suzanne Brøgger (b. 1944) surely takes the prize for best title with her prose collection, A Fighting Pig’s Too Tough to Eat. Brøgger’s writings transgress genre and have often prompted comparison with her fellow countrywoman, Karen Blixen. This collection traces her development from social rebel to iconoclast and visionary.

These are more abstract dialogues -- the first, for example, involving a Doctor, a Theologian, and a Humanist -- and they make for a fascinating different level of discussion of the issues that Malin is grappling with. As Boye had resigned as editor of Spektrum she earned her living from translations and writing short stories for weekly magazines. From 1936-1938 Boye was employed as teacher at Viggbyholm school, but suffered from periods of depression and suicide attempts. [2] Kerstin Ekman (b. 1933) provides a literary smörgåsbord to choose from. She is the author of Childhood, and of our recently reissued Women and the City tetralogy. Begin with Witches’ Rings: the central character is a woman so anonymous that her name is not even mentioned on her gravestone.You can read excerpts from Ekman’s other work published in translation by our friends over at Swedish Book Review. In 1931 Boye, together with Erik Mesterton and Josef Riwkin, founded the poetry magazine Spektrum, introducing T. S. Eliot and the Surrealists to Swedish readers. Together with the critic Erik Mesterton, she translated Eliot's "The Waste Land". She was largely responsible for translating the work of T. S. Eliot into Swedish.

Though some fans might have thought that Crisis was simply created for Young Royals, that’s not the case. Written by Karin Boye, the Swedish novel (with the Swedish title Kris) actually came out in 1934. What is the plot of Crisis about? An emphasis on conformity following Hitler’s assumption of power in Germany in 1933 had led to the creation of a totalitarian state. Book bonfires were held to destroy books which did not agree with the ideology of national socialism. Karin Boye had already in 1934 turned her attention towards the influence the German politicisation of Nietzche’s life philosophy was having on leading Swedish literary critics. She viewed art as an important arena of freedom from the various authoritarian-bound traditional views on what was forbidden – that which was to be warded off, excised, removed. To her literature was a place for investigation and to conquer reality.

Hagar Olsson (1893–1978) and Karin Boye (1900–1941) would absolutely be seated together, and we would recommend reading them together, too: Chitambo and Crisis are the perfect modernist pairing. She translated many of Eliot's works into Swedish; she and Mesterton translated " The Waste Land". [2] Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940): definitely a seat at the head of the table for her! Reading Lagerlöf is life-changing. A good place to start is with our Lagerlöf in English series. You can thank us later! Crisis was obviously an innovative book in many ways; as well as the sometimes complex and unusual structure, it also allows the reader to look at Malin from a number of different viewpoints. The use of the device of her fellow students’ letters and diary entries lets us see Malin as she appears to others, which is very different to how she perceives herself, and not always flattering. The discussion sections reveal the issues at work in Malin’s psyche, as she struggles to find herself amongst others’ expectations. And the infatuation with her fellow pupil, which is never developed into more than a longing or crush (as it’s described by one character), hints at a lesbian subtext which could perhaps not be developed more at the time. Certainly, Boye herself moved from marriage to a man, to a relationship with another woman who was the love of her life, and it’s hard not to see the author in her protagonist. She was hardly a person any longer. She existed as a kind of bundle that could be placed and positioned anywhere, but which couldn’t move on its own."

Unfortunately, like many super-talented and sometimes troubled creative minds before her, she committed suicided in 1941. Tragically, her partner Margot also committed suicide shortly afterwards. She is drawn to Siv, and pursues that -- "She was on a voyage to discover Siv" --, but she can also barely muster herself to more than an immature puppy love: "that timid, wide-eyed look of admiration she directed towards Siv's lovely profile -- comical, just comical !"The story prevalent in Crisis parallels Wilhelm and Simon’s own in many ways, besides just being Swedish stories. Both plots showcase young individuals going off to school, a time that many are able to learn more about themselves and live their lives freely. Her days will be a struggle against forbidden feelings. At night she’ll sleep on the floor to escape dreams she is not allowed to dream. Boye's novel "Crisis" (Sw. "Kris") depicts her religious crisis and lesbianism. In her novels "Merit awakens" (Sw. "Merit vaknar") and "Too little" (Sw. "För lite") she explores male and female role-playing. Though the characters in Crisis and Young Royals are affected by a different force (religion, taking over the throne), they each go through a similar journey of learning more about who they are and how they want to live their lives. Camilla Collett(1813–1895) is a pioneer in Norwegian literature. Translated by Kirsten Seaver, her novel The District Governor’s Daughters portrays a bourgeois society in which marriage is a woman’s only salvation, and follows sympathetically the struggles of one intelligent young woman to break out of this mould. Boye amusingly has her add that she speaks from experience -- "I know, I've done it myself" -- showing that she really didn't get (or learn) anything out of it.) Everything is called into question -- "Everything has changed recently. I've begun to doubt everything", she admits -- as even the apparent certainty of her future no longer offers that easy hold: when she is summoned to the Principal's office and asked what her plans are after she completes her studies: Some of the formal inventiveness is that of a young author still trying to figure out how to tell a story (or rather how to present specific issues, and how to capture a character). There is some dialogue at the end of the book, a discussion about Malin's transformation that involves a lot of different people. I absolutely hated this as part of the ending because most of the participants in the discussion said how selfish and disgusting Malin is for following her "desire" instead of her beliefs. This just confirms Malin's biggest fear and thoughts throughout the novel.
