Ein eosinophiler Granulozyt sieht mit etwa 15 bis 20 µm Durchmesser unter dem Mikroskop rund 2 bis 3 mal so groß aus wie ein Erythrozyt (rotes Blutkörperchen). Durch die kugelförmige Gestalt ist sein Volumen jedoch deutlich wesentlich größer. Im Zellinneren sind neben dem Zellkern vor allem die rot eingefärbten Granulas (Vesikel) zu erkennen. Diese enthalten basische Proteine, die toxisch (giftig) wirken. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel: Excited state eosin abstracts a hydrogen atom (HAT process *EY → ˙EY–H) in cyclization reactions.
