About this deal

Francis creates a relationship with Mehuru, an African obalawa, an African priest who is captured by Josiah Coles sailors and is shipped over to be sold into the slave trade. There was nothing to fear, there was nothing to make him uneasy, yet still he stood wakeful and listening as if the coop-coop-coop of the hunting owls or the little squeaks from the bats which clung around the stone towers of the palace might bring him a warning. This enormously talented London stage and RSC actress brings the whole package: extraordinary beauty, emotional range, presence, and a wondrous voice that is itself "sheer theatrical viagra" (forget about the recent overrated displays on the London stage in "The Blue Room" and "The Graduate").

Philippa Gregory makes a fine job of conveying the disgust each race feels for the physical aspects of the other. This lonely, scorned figure learns herbs and potions, surrounds herself with lions, and, in a heart-stopping chapter, outwits the monster Scylla to propel Daedalus and his boat to safety. From opposite ends of the earth, despite the enmity of slavery, Mehuru and Frances confront each other and their need for love and liberty. A riveting read by one of the Queens of the historical novel, Philippa Gregory, a wealth of detail and vividly drawn characters and situations this is a must read for her fans and an eye opener to those not versed in the subject content of the slave trade.and here is the crux of the problem: Gregory allows herself to fall into the trap of inverting and so sustaining the racial differences that allow slavery in the first place: while the `baddies' see the Africans as animals, she portrays them as saints. I don't know if I'll ever read another Philippa Gregory book and if I do it'll only be because I want to see if it's just as poorly written as A Respectable Trade. Cut to spring, 1940: Viann has said goodbye to husband Antoine, who's off to hold the Maginot line against invading Germans.

Our features are original articles from our print magazines (these will say where they were originally published) or original articles commissioned for this site. For years, Isobel Latimer has composed serious novels for serious people, but to dwindling acclaim and ever-more dwindling gain.Readers will relish following the puzzle of this unpromising daughter of the sun god Helios and his wife, Perse, who had negligible use for their child. Trading her social contacts for Josiah’s protection, Frances enters the world of the Bristol merchants and finds her life and fortune dependent on the respectable trade of sugar, rum and slaves. There was simply too many of them, and I think she should've kept the focus on the two main characters, and then maybe throw in another side character or two to develop. Touchstone Books, 2007, 2nd trade paperback printing, rare US historical novel set in Bristol, England in 1787 and with African slavery, nice copy, minor wear to edges, still solid VG+. Riding bareback in a travelling show, while her sister Dandy risks her life on the trapeze, Meridon dedicates herself to freeing them both from danger and want.

As the 18th century draws to a close, Great Britain has become a major international power through victory over France in the Americas and the colonisation of large parts of India.Rather than opt for comfortable characters and pat storylines, Ms Gregory has crafted a quiet, powerful meditation on the nature of mankind's inhumanity toward our fellow man, and the compromises we make to excuse and obscure our choices. A premissa era boa e a autora alinhavou a história com todos os ingredientes para um belíssimo livro. That is not to excuse our role in the history of slavery, only to point out that we were not alone, and that we were not the worst, whatever consolation that might provide. But Stephen is a man deeply scarred, still troubled by nightmares of the fighting on the plains of Flanders, alienated from his comfortable home, his family firm of solicitors, and close to no-one but his shell shocked mute batman, Coventry.
