a mischief of rats is the third book in the dr nell ward series and probably my favourite. this book felt much more cohesive and didn't drag on unnecessarily. the mystery is finally the main focus instead of the agitating love triangle between nell, rav, and james which was pretty exhausting to read about in the two previous books. the newly added characters were fine and the subplots weren't anything revolutionary or groundbreaking but they did fit into the main plot rather well. As part of island restoration, some islands' rat populations have been eradicated to protect or restore the ecology. Hawadax Island, Alaska was declared rat free after 229 years and Campbell Island, New Zealand after almost 200 years. Breaksea Island in New Zealand was declared rat free in 1988 after an eradication campaign based on a successful trial on the smaller Hawea Island nearby.EXCERPT: ' . . . There is one other thing. We've found another crashed car this morning. Further along the road from the collapsed wall. And well down the bank, hidden from the road. A dog walker found it.' Mench, Chris (4 February 2022). Gibbs RA et al.: Genome sequence of the Brown Norway rat yields insights into mammalian evolution.: Nature. 2004 April 1; 428(6982):475–6. Domestic rats differ from wild rats in many ways. They are calmer and less likely to bite; they can tolerate greater crowding; they breed earlier and produce more offspring; and their brains, livers, kidneys, adrenal glands, and hearts are smaller (Barnett 2002). The Major Crimes Unit led by detective sergeant James Clark and detective crime inspector Val Johnson treats Nell as both a potential suspect and witness. They grow even more suspicious when they discover that Ward had been hiding part of her identity from them.Multiple studies have explored the thermoregulatory capacity of rodent tails by subjecting test organisms to varying levels of physical activity and quantifying heat conduction via the animals' tails. One study demonstrated a significant disparity in heat dissipation from a rat's tail relative to its abdomen. [13] This observation was attributed to the higher proportion of vascularity in the tail, as well as its higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, which directly relates to heat's ability to dissipate via the skin. These findings were confirmed in a separate study analyzing the relationships of heat storage and mechanical efficiency in rodents that exercise in warm environments. In this study, the tail was a focal point in measuring heat accumulation and modulation. [ citation needed] In fact, the ‘Rat King’ has been a bad omen for centuries, and is routinely cited in popular folklore. Rats, generally, are baby-making machines. Female rats can mate around 500 times in a six-hour period and brown rats can produce up to 2,000 offspring in a year, according to Discover Magazine. Brown rats can have up to 22 young at once, though eight or nine is more the average. Tropical rats tend to only have one to six babies at once.

In Indian tradition, rats are seen as the vehicle of Ganesha, and a rat's statue is always found in a temple of Ganesh. In the northwestern Indian city of Deshnoke, the rats at the Karni Mata Temple are held to be destined for reincarnation as Sadhus ( Hindu holy men). The attending priests feed milk and grain to the rats, of which the pilgrims also partake.Having recognised an opportunity, Mark Reynolds, the owner of Reynolds Precision Engineering, is responsible for restoring Lucio Moretti’s gullwing with an electric engine, believing that if the car performs well in the event, it will generate commissions from the classic car enthusiasts who are keen to polish their eco credentials.
