About this deal

A couple of these actions are quite simple: Explore lets a player draw one card from their faction (Clan) deck, while Populate lets a player add one worker from the general supply. The barbarians are aggressive, the Japanese value trade, the Egyptians have plentiful gold and the Romans are builders extraordinaire. This week we released a new expansion for Imperial Settlers, so let’s go back and read about developing the base game of Imperial Settlers!

Easter egg alert: lift the insert out of the game box and check out one of the hidden insert side panels for a little surprise. Although the game is up to 4 players, you can get an expansion with a new faction which allows a 5th player. The Expedition board is a first-come-first-served affair, and the available islands are refreshed each round, meaning if you do plan to go, you need to plan quick and act fast. Here’s what intrigued me about the Expedition phase during each of my plays: one would think that a tight card market would lead to some island cards being significantly better than other cards. It feels like you are playing in isolation and it isn't much fun waiting for other people to make their turn since their cards are completely different and so not much interest for you to watch what they are up to. Your opponent is playing the Atlanteans and has a Wood Market in play with both a Basic and Advanced Scoring Technology token. Now that I’ve been able to play it several times since then, I wanted to explain how the game plays, and give my thoughts about it. The first time I played as Romans and I had a special card that let me send a couple of men to remove an opponent's building, but the next few games I never came across the same style card and the game had completely different play. As the game went on, they became more understanding of how to maximize their civilizations for earning potential.

It offers 48 unique Village sheets – all with different buildings – so each time you play, you are challenged with a different situation. During the game, you’ve still got a Lookout phase (where players draw cards to determine which ones to keep) and an Action phase, with Action cards that can be tapped, Buildings that can be Razed, and Fields that can be Harvested.

If a player goes before you, they are going to raze your “spend three different resources for three points” Building each round. And speaking of the clans, the game comes with six different clans and each one of them really does play differently. I’m glad I got to get back on the bike with this gaming universe, even if I only liked Empires of the North, instead of loving it. Use an Action card’s ability: the player will pay the card’s ability cost – placing the paid costs onto the card – and then perform the action. Yes, in the base game, players will find six pre-constructed decks ready to use straight out of the box.
