About this deal

Unlike London Dry Gin, which can be found in plenty of variations across the planet, there’s only one brand that sells Plymouth Gin. It’s aptly called the same name. Plymouth Gin differs from London Dry Gin in that it’s slightly less dry – likely due to the higher concentration of root ingredients. It has a slightly earthier flavor and comes in two core strengths – standard and Navy Strength. Featuring a unique botanical blend, including garden grown rhubarb and apples, Clydesdale Gin is distilled in a local collaboration to celebrate the working Clydesdale Horse and long-standing tradition of fruit growing in the Clyde Valley.

Whilst The Wee Farm Distillery may be ‘small’ in name, they a big in passion, ambition and innovation. It's time to go old school and get a taste of gin brands that have revived the oldest gin recipes in the world. We begin with the oldest of the two, genever. Taking the Drovers Gin as a base to work from (and what a base to work from!), the Navy expression amps up the flagships ABV to a meaty 57%.

When it comes to food, I always used to raise an eyebrow when Stilton made it anywhere near our shopping list. Why would anyone eat mould?! These days, if panic buying were ever to reach a clear down of the middle class deli counter, I’d seriously consider leaving a Babybel to go out of date just to get a taste of the stuff! This really is a case of a triple threat on the tasting, where all of the sense are brought to life in a balanced and equally measured way. Aviation is produced in Portland, Oregon, by House Spirits Distillery. It is distilled from neutral grain spirit with 100 percent rye base, an unusual beginning in the gin market. It's flavored with juniper, anise seed, Elettaria cardamom, coriander, lavender, sweet orange peel, and sarsaparilla. It, too, is slightly overproofed, bottled at 42 percent ABV (84 proof), so it's not as delicate as it's often made out to be. As time had passed, the unassuming mini had made its way behind larger bottles in the cupboard and evaded my eye-line. And so then, with an 18 months unintentional hiatus (sorry Jenny!), it seemed I had some catching up to do with the teams ‘Clydesdale Gin’ then…

London Dry might be the choice for the original gin drinker, but it would be a shame to bypass the other options available on the market too. So with curiosity now peaking at cat killing levels ( Note to reader: no cats were harmed in the writing of this blog!) it was time to put on my metaphorical armbands, attach the nose clip and apply the swimming goggles. I’d heard the waves were raging, but I was hoping that the waters would be warm. I was going in… The juniper is beautifully balanced, and lingers purposefully behind those bold red fruits, with suggestions of a rich and warming sweet spice. It works brilliantly as a G&T, with a fresh raspberry garnish. The tonic pulls forward a little more sweetness, whilst maintaining the strong raspberry flavour, putting a delicate and floral touch on a classic.Pride. You sense it in every single word from Isle of Harris Distillers. From interviews to press releases, web copy to social posts, it visibly embodies the entire organisation. And speaking of their botanicals, this London Dry Gin counts amongst its armoury of 11 ingredients; lemon peel, orange peel, lemon verbena, cardamom, bay leaf, cassia bark, liquorice, nutmeg, coriander, angelica root and (of course) juniper. Jenny explained to me “the reason why I distilled it to 59% (ABV), as opposed to 57%, is because it really brings out the optimum flavour profile from the botanicals. I tested with other ABVs, and 59 worked wonderfully”. The saffron also gives Nolet’s Reserve its slightly tinted amber coloring and warm, deep spice flavor. Unsurprisingly, it’s a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

This is the signature gin used to make a Sapphire martinias well as the Sapphire alpine. The two blue martinis use blue curaçao to get that beautiful color, and they're a delight to drink. Barrel-aged gin: Relatively uncommon in the gin world, barrel-aged gins are exactly that: gins that have been aged in a barrel. It’s a slightly unusual practice, which allows the gin to soak up some of the flavors from the barrels as well as the botanicals. Barrel-aged gin has a hint of color, almost reminiscent of some lighter whiskies. As previously mentioned, I wouldn’t usually advise drinking liquids from unmarked bottles. But when the contents is this delicious I make an exception… Julian Vallis says:“I like Achroous because of it breaking the mould by being a ‘sessionable’ gin with an Old Tom character, despite it having no added sugar.Where Valhalla is a beautiful sipping gin, Thought & Memory is stunning as a longer drink – and it makes a mean G&T.
