About this deal

It's a compelling and maddening story, and reflects the complexity of how international institutions function and interact and the difficulty of accountability in a situation where people have immunity for their actions. But, it's also a story of gutsy people in tough and compromising situations making decisions that aren't in their personal best interest. [33]

I loved this book but I was totally outraged upon reading it. I knew some horrors were committed in Bosnia during the siege that lasted from 1992 to 1996. In all approximately 100 000 innocent civilians, including thousands of children were killed. a b Porter, Lynette (12 September 2010). "More than a Movie: 'The Whistleblower's Heartfelt Plea for Greater Humanity". Pop Matters . Retrieved 7 October 2013. An excellent book set in the world of politics. The theme covers a situation of intrigue and dishonesty. The narrative is easy to follow and provides the reader with an insight to political events over decades without naming individuals. The character descriptions enable the reader to connect or relate with past parliamentarians. As Kathy would go further in her investigations, she would discover that people from DynCorp would go to the brothels and pay to use these girls, and some would buy these girls and resell them among DynCorp people. a b c d e f Lynch, Colum (29 June 2011). I have to say, I really didn't want to go to see this movie. I've seen enough 'shit happening to women movies' in my life, I could well imagine what it was going to be like. If you are a girl it will put you off sex. But still, read the book or see the movie, just so people like Obama do get that we care. McDermid, who worked as a journalist in the 70s and 80s, gives a nail-biting account of the newsroom, and Allie is another character I’m looking forward to learning more about. a b c Leong, Melissa (17 September 2010). "Star Rachel Weisz and subject Kathryn Bolkovac on detaching themselves from the events of The Whistleblower". The National Post. Archived from the original on 7 July 2012 . AS Gil digs further and askes more questions he finds himself deeper and deeper in a rabbit hole. Most people have their doubts about politicians and journalists and this book definitely feeds the mind for the conspiracies, secrets and lies that abound Parliament and also the tabloids. The whistleblower by Robert Peston, is his first novel, he has his own politics show and often talks on the news about political matters. When Nebraska police officer, and divorced mother of three, Kathryn Bolkovac, saw a recruiting announcement for private military contractor DynCorp International, she applied and was hired. Good money, world travel, and the chance to help rebuild a war-torn country sounded like the perfect job. Bolkovac was shipped out to Bosnia, where DynCorp had been contracted to support the UN peacekeeping mission. She was assigned as a human rights investigator, heading the gender affairs unit. Savage, Sophia (29 June 2011). "Many Festivals, Many Winners: iW Rounds up June's Major Film Fest Awards". Indie Wire . Retrieved 6 October 2013. This may be the biggest query of them all, as we wonder how and why a 17-year-old Penelope Featherington decided to become the source of all the hottest tea in Regency London. The 2017 blog post was not the first time Fowler spoke up in that way. While she was studying physics at the University of Pennsylvania, she writes, she tangled with professors and administrators: A fellow student had been navigating a mental-health crisis, and school officials, she writes, seemed to expect her to take responsibility for his struggles. (“This is your job now,” she recounts a professor informing her.) She protested—to that professor, to others, to a dean. She was not equipped, she pointed out, to give her fellow student the help he needed. And, as concerned as she was for him, it was not her job to take time from her own studies to make sure he received that assistance. Soon her fellow students and professors, she writes, were branding her as difficult. “Now I was nothing more than a liability,” she writes.

Weisz compared Bolkovac's story of "one lone woman fighting injustice" to that of David and Goliath, her favorite film genre. [12] In the film, as in real life, Bolkovac begins by investigating a case of a kidnapped girl. As the story unfolds, she discovers a wide-ranging web of corruption and faces growing obstacles. The sex trade is facilitated by a large, influential organization. [16] When she tries to report her findings to the UN and local officials, she receives threats and is "shunned by coworkers and thwarted by higher-ups". Weisz explained that she liked the idea of an ordinary person doing something extraordinary. She said, "I love that kind of thriller, the ordinary person who, because of their character, it's their character that leads them." [12] Release [ edit ] Rachel Weisz at the film's 2010 Toronto Film Festival premiere Robert Peston has certainly put his vast insider knowledge and experience as a political journalist to great effect in this superb debut novel.

His book, The Whistleblower, is a genuinely entertaining political thriller, but it sometimes feels uncomfortable that Robert Peston has chosen to draw so graphically on his own life for his first novel.
