Welch, Chris (October 9, 2018). "Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL announced with bigger screens and best cameras yet". The Verge. Archived from the original on October 9, 2018 . Retrieved October 10, 2018. CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev 0, EDGE, GPRS, CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev A, HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS, HSPA+, LTE, LTE-A, TD-LTE Give it a couple of hours, though, and the notch becomes much less obvious when you’re actually doing stuff. I’m not saying you’ll forget all about it, but in general day-to-day phone use I’m not constantly thinking ‘why is this notch here’. I’ll start with that notch, because it’s really the first thing that catches your eye. I’ve got nothing against notches in general, but the size of the one used here feels a step too far. It droops down noticeably more than an iPhone XS Max and as a result impacts on the content a lot.

Epstein, Zach (October 16, 2018). "Google's Pixel 3 has a pretty serious design problem that no one's talking about". BGR. Archived from the original on October 20, 2018 . Retrieved October 20, 2018. The Google Pixel 3 XL release date was October 18, 2018 in the US, and November 1, 2018 in the UK and Australia, and it launched thereafter is Canada, France, Germany, Japan, India, Ireland, Italy, Singapore, Spain, and Taiwan. The front set of cameras consist of a pair of 8MP standard and wide-angle sensors. The latter can snap with a 97-degree field of view, giving you a wider sense of your surroundings when taking a selfie. The sensors are sharp and accurate when it comes to color reproduction and skin tones. Most interestingly, while it appears to have barrel distortion in the viewfinder, with post-processing the effect is removed, minimizing the distinctive fish-eye effect we normally see on wide-angle cameras. Likely taking heed of complaints from last year, Google has given the Pixel 3 several screen color modes from the more color accurate Natural to a richer, more saturated Boosted. By default, it's on Adaptive, which I find offers the best of both worlds. Viewing angles are great and brightness is high enough to easily see the screen outdoors and even under direct sunlight, barring some reflectivity. Once Google Duplex is rolled out, the phone will be able to do even more in the call department. Google Assistant can take over calling duties for you, sparing you from the tedium of tasks like scheduling hair appointments and making dinner reservations.Google Lens is directly integrated in Google's Pixel 3". The frame edges are polished and the rear fingerprint sensor is flatter.

Google has just announced the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. For an in-depth look at both phones take a look at our Pixel 4 review: hands on and Pixel 4 XL review: hands on. The chin below the display remains and once again this is so there’s enough space for another front speaker.

Performance is everything you'd expect from a flagship phone in late 2018. Like its larger sibling, the Pixel 3 is powered by a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, with 4GB of RAM. That isn't as much as some other new phones that come with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, but it's still ample for multitasking and high-end gaming. Obviously the Pixel 3 XL has a bigger screen than the Pixel 3, but it's also sharper. It boasts a crisp 6.3-inch Quad HD OLED display with a 2,960-by-1,440 resolution in an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. This works out to 523 pixels per inch, sharper than the Pixel 3 (443ppi), the iPhone XS Max (458ppi) and the Galaxy Note 9 (516ppi). Etienne, Stefan (January 8, 2019). "Google's latest Pixel 3 update improves audio quality in video recordings". The Verge . Retrieved May 24, 2019. But the Pixel 3 XL is more functional: It has two selfie cameras, dual front-facing speakers, and Active Edge, allowing you to squeeze the sides of the frame to trigger Google Assistant. We prefer this over a dedicated AI button, something that annoys us about Samsung and LG’s new phones with dedicated, often-mispressed AI buttons.

Customer reviews

According to Dr. Ray Soneira at DisplayMate Labs, t he Pixel 3 XL has a top-tier display with excellent calibration accuracy and performance that is "visually indistinguishable from perfect." It falls into the same category as the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy S9, and the iPhone X/XS Max, earning a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award, with each screen standing out for its own particular strengths. The Pixel 3 XL fits into one hand, but takes two hands to operate and it’s a little more slippery to hold than the Pixel 2 XL. The difference isn’t Earth (or phone) shattering, though we did end up preferring the tighter dimensions of the standard Google Pixel 3 for this reason. Camera performance is where the Pixel 3 really stands out. It "only" has a single 12.2MP dual-pixel camera with optical image stabilization, foregoing the double or triple rear sensors we're seeing on other leading phones. Despite this, it has one of the fastest, most responsive sensors we've tested, with excellent post-processing and low-light capabilities. We put it to the test in a shootout against the iPhone XS Max, the Galaxy Note 9, and the LG V40 ThinQ. While the Pixel 3 didn't necessarily come out on top in every setting, it took the most consistently good shots, capturing the most detail in a variety of challenging scenarios. Still, get over the notch – along with the software oddities that come with it – and you’ll find a phone with the best camera on the market. You'll still find dual front-facing speakers on the Google Pixel 3. No one else is really doing this anymore (except Razer with the Razer Phone 2), so it's nice to see in a flagship device. You'll also get Active Edge, which allows you to squeeze the sides of the phone to call up Google Assistant. We much prefer this squeeze mechanic as opposed to a dedicated AI button on the frame, like Samsung does with Bixby button (which we often confuse for the volume down button).

One thing we haven't mentioned is Digital Wellbeing. It's a new panel in the Settings menu that shows your device usage, what apps you've accessed, and gives you options to restrict your phone's hold over your life by letting you set a wind-down period before bedtime, limiting interruptions and graying out the screen to discourage use. Over time the phone uses machine learning to understand what apps you use and prioritize them over others when it comes to memory and power. Swider, Matt (October 15, 2018). "Google Pixel 3 review".
