About this deal

We ensure our Preschool pupils are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception. Children in KS1 will love challenging classmates or making the phonetic noises all together! Think of actions or motions to go with the sounds to make sessions more dynamic.

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home. You can use our Phase 2, 3 and 5 Phonemes Sound Mat as a light warm-up activity to jog the memory before moving onto this fun yet challenging task!

We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’. These include: The Reading Leader and SLT use the audit and prompt cards to regularly monitor and observe teaching; they use the summative data to identify children who need additional support and gaps in learning. The teaching of Phonics is fast-paced, and we encourage all children to actively participate in each lesson, and by encouraging the children to take ownership of their learning we are continuously striving for excellence. Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. The reading practice sessions have been designed to focus on three key reading skills: At Princes Risborough Primary Schoolwe aim to ensure that weprovide all children with the fundamental skills that will enable them to be confident and fluent readers.

We use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the keep-up resources at pace. At Princes Risborough Primary, we believe that reading and writing is an essential life skill and we are dedicated to enabling our children to become enthused, engaged and successful lifelong readers and writers. To support this, we practise the ‘Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised’ Phonics scheme and implement the following: Every Reception and Key Stage 1 teacher in our school has been trained to teach reading, the aim throughout the academic year of 2022 – 2023 is to train all staff, with priority given to the HLTAs and TAs who work with children with additional needs, across key stages. This is to ensure we have the same expectations of progress. Assessment is used to monitor progress and to identify any child needing additional support as soon as they need it. Children who are receiving additional phonics ‘keep-up’ sessions read their reading practice book to an adult daily.o Children in Reception are taught to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs, and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) with fluency and accuracy. By moving the colourful cards around on the table, turning it into a game, children will find learning phonics stimulating. This set covers Phases 2 to 5 of the curriculum. Find resources for the other phases here. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
