About this deal

In the case of the Cherries reference, I decided that there was enough there to work with to create my artwork. I noted one small change to make to the direction of one of the stems. I decided to draw it pointing to the left rather than the right. This created a pleasing variation in the lines and overall composition. How to create your line drawing There are many ways to get the job done when it comes to burnishing. Many pencil manufacturers make their own version of a burnishing pencil. These are pencils without color and mostly contain just the wax and/or oil found in a colored pencil. You may also choose to use another colored pencil as your burnisher.

Blending will be greatly assisted with the help of a thinner, however, so this needs to be considered before going to work with these. That being said, you can still blend successfully without the assistance of paint thinner if necessary. But to open the core material up, just a small dab of some sort of solvent seems to release things. They aren’t quite as soft as those more expensive brands, which should have the benefit of making them more durable, while still providing a creamy touch on paper. That’s perfect for getting even coverage over a larger area. Accidental burnishing can limit your options and can damage the drawing surface. Once you’ve flattened out the tooth (the surface texture) of the paper it can be difficult or impossible to add more layers. Heavy pressure (or burnishing) too earlier in the process can also cause your surface to look unfinished. It can also leave white spots trapped under the multiple pencil layers. One thing to remember with Polychromos, is not to rush, take your time to build up layers in an almost meditative concentrated way. These pencils are definitely in the premium group of offerings and their price reflects this. Prices per pencil go well into the premium price range, especially with the optional wood case. For some people, this might be too much for what amounts to a casual hobby but for those professionals who want some of the best, you have to pay to play. And with the right hands, you will be able to achieve some special results with these pencils that most “lesser” sets won’t be able to match. Overall ranking – 4.5/5

The fine quality of Goldfaber begins with eco-friendly growth from pine wood. The pencil is comprised of pigments and wax, finely-ground and mixed together to create soft and intensive strokes with the vibrant colors we all know and love. Goldfaber is highly pigmented for great lightfastness, and its 3.3mm lead is break-resistant as well as water-resistant and smudge proof. The pencil is labeled by the name Goldfaber, as well as UPC number and color number with its lead color painted at the end of the pencil. With a huge color choice of up to 120 count sets available, just about any color approach imaginable can be achieved with these. The hearty core is wrapped around in a round wooden exterior. Visual Appeal – 4.5/5 There are the brands that artists know and trust, such as Faber-Castell and Caran d’Ache, who produce professional-grade pencils. Then there are the less well-known manufacturers that might offer better value, especially if you are just starting out. There is not a requirement on when or reasons to burnish colored pencil artwork. It comes down to a style choice. If you like a more saturated, polished look to your finished piece then you may choose to burnish. Color-wise there isn’t much that can beat these. The color is mostly true-to-form and what you see on the outside of the pencil is what you get. Depending on the application, you can get deep colors with fantastic intensity. Blending is quite good although, being an oil-based pencil, the assistance of turpentine/thinner is encouraged by not required. Polychromos means “many colors” and this name is quite accurate as you can go from singles up to the 120-piece behemoth set.

Polychromos, coloured artist pencils by Faber Castell, are an artist quality oil based coloured pencil, used by professional artists around the world. Also used by adult colouring enthusiasts and crafters. Faber Castell is a German company and the worlds largest manufacturer of pencils, founded over 250 years ago. Before starting a new art piece, I ask myself the question: Will this reference help me make a compelling work of art? If you are brand new to art and don't feel comfortable creating your line drawing, feel free to use a ruler to get an exact placement for the elements in this piece. Finding the best colouring pencils, the ones that feel just right in your hand, ultimately boils down to personal choice. But that’s not to say we can’t nudge you in the right direction with our guide to the leading brands for artists. My teenage daughter is a budding artist and she draws and colours prolifically so she'd wanted these for a long time. The depth of colour is brilliant and they are so easy to use as you don't have to apply much pressure so no aching hands from hours of colouring. Very impressed!” - Kim Larrad-Tye

For detailed artist drawings, we recommend using a smooth paper, such as Bristol board, Strathmore toned pads, Hot Press Watercolour Paper or textured Pastelmat. The oil-based core of the Faber-Castell Polychromos Colored Pencils manages to be quite strong while still having a soft feel to it. This happy balance is something that Faber-Castell is very good at and has nearly perfected here. The application is a joy and exploring the different characteristics of the color on the paper never gets old. The Polychromos pencil, is made using high quality acid free pigments, each pencil has its own number and name, the round barrel pencil is also coloured to match the pigment of the colour inside. These oil based pencils lay down soft vibrant colour tones, that can be built up with multiple layers without creating a wax shiny bloom, that is apparent in wax pencils. A special process call Secural Bonding, ensures the pencil lead is secured to the cedar wood casing, resulting in high resistance to breakage and great sharpening results. The coloured lead is 3.8mm, with 120 colours to choose from, you won't be short on colour choice. This reasonably priced pencil is our most popular coloured pencil to date.
