About this deal

The Liquid Freezer II features a completely new, PWM-controlled pump design, which offers improved efficiency with low power usage and quiet operation. Arctic says the new Liquid Freezer II pump ensures an ideal ratio of a high CPU cooling performance and a low noise level. This means that coolers that kept previous generation products like the i9-10900K nice and cool sometimes struggle to keep Intel's i9-12900K under TJ max–the maximum temperature before the CPU starts to throttle. Many coolers that I’ve tested fail to keep the i9-12900K under TJ max when power limits are removed in workloads like Cinebench and OCCT when I’ve tested them, including many coolers I previously considered “top of the line.”

Arctic Liquid Freezer 120 Review

As far as software is concerned, the Kraken M22 is compatible with NZXT Cam. This software lets you adjust the fan’s RPM and the RGB LED configuration. It’s quite simple and straightforward and allows you a great deal of control. In fact, the RGB controls are some of the most intuitive you’ll find. The ASUS ROG Strix LC 120 is a robust, high-performance AIO with customizable RGB lights on the pump head. It looks stylish and modern, and its cooling abilities are amazing, but it gets just a little bit too loud to take the top spot as the best 120mm AIO cooler. As far as build quality is concerned, the EK AIO D-RGB is top-notch. The rubber tubing is reinforced, sleeved, and fitted with an aluminum cover, so you won’t have to worry about leaks. The diamond-cut rotary fittings also allow for some adjustment upon installation, so even cramped towers will be able to accommodate this EK cooler and its small footprint. Should anything go wrong, EK also offers a five-year warranty. The NZXT Kraken M22 is perhaps the most impressive-looking AIO cooler on the list. Its pump boasts an “infinity RGB” design that honestly looks spectacular. But is this cooler all show and no substance?

Not a big deal since laying the board flat on the table bypasses it, but this could be even easier if Arctic refined the solution with cap screws. On the installation front, buyers should also be aware of the short cables for the fans. They can be connected to the splitter cable (which is sleeved alongside the tubes), but we prefer connecting our fans directly to the motherboard to exercise more control over the fans. This is easily solved with some 4-pin-to-4-pin extension cables. Radiator Dimensions: 155 x 120 x 27mm / 6.1 x 4.7 x 1.1” | Fan Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm / 4.7 x 4.7 x 1” | Fan Speed: 550 ~ 2200 RPM +/- 10 % | Noise Volume: Up to 36.4 dBA | Warranty: 5 years A 120 mm Arctic P12 model is used as a fan, which was specially developed for use on radiators. The 120 millimeter fan ensures a strong air flow at a maximum of 1,800 rpm. Thanks to the 4-pin PWM connection, the fan only rotates as fast as the temperature development on the CPU requires.

As far as price is concerned, the Thermaltake TH120 is an absolute bargain. It’s one of the most affordable 120mm AIO coolers, and on top of that, it comes with a 3-year manufacturer warranty. Our next chart continues with the 3950X 200W load, but allows all the coolers to run at 100% fan speed during the test. This doesn’t move the needle much for Arctic, which seems to top-out in its efficiency at around 1200RPM rather than its maximum 1600RPM. The results were +/-1C as usual, but our average ended up at 50.9 degrees over ambient. That’s not enough of a change, so there’s room to reduce noise level without much loss of overall performance. At the 1610RPM speed, the Arctic cooler ran at 42.5dBA at the normal 20” distance. This puts it about equal in thermal performance to the NZXT Kraken X62 and X72, which run around 51-53dBA, or a perceived noise increase to the human ear of about 2x. Again, that’s perceived to the human ear, not acoustic power, which is a different scale. Either way, Arctic’s solution is significantly quieter at the same performance. The EVGA CLC 360 shows that we’re not limited by our test bench, but also that jet engine levels of noise are needed to drive the temperature down further. 3800X – 35dBA Radiator Dimensions: 154 x 123 x 49mm / 6.0 x 4.8 x 1.9” | Fan Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm / 4.7 x 4.7 x 1” | Fan Speed: Up to 2435 RPM | Noise Volume: Up to 37.7 dBa | Warranty: 5 years In addition to the new pump design, Arctic has fitted the Liquid Freezer II with an integrated motherboard VRM cooling solution – something which we have often hoped to see on an AIO cooler. Arctic has designed a 40mm blower type fan setup into the pump body which potentially can blow cool air out in three directions; this should help with VRM cooling, which in turn can improve performance. Another very interesting design feature of the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is its extremely neat and tidy appearance. Arctic has integrated cable management into fully sleeved tubes for a clean look in your PC’s case. Both fan cables run inside the tube sleeving and connect to the pump housing. A single cable then comes from the pump and connects to the motherboard, which drives both fans and the pump.

However, premium things come with a premium price tag, as the ML120R is one of the more expensive AIO coolers in its class. Of course, you’ll get a lot of features at this price point, and Cooler Master includes a 2-year warranty as well. If you think of it as competing against coolers with larger form factors, and you should because of its performance, then this cooler actually represents great value. All in all, this is a great option for an AIO water cooler. It has a small footprint, so you’ll be able to install it in most towers, and it’s highly durable due to the quality of its components. The included 5-year warranty is also a welcome sight. Overall, the EK AIO D-RGB represents good value. While stress testing in Cinebench, I run both with power limits removed and with an enforced 200W CPU power limit. In this test setup I’m using MSI’s z690 A Pro DDR4 Motherboard and Be Quiet’s Silent Base 802 Computer Case. Only the best coolers are able to pass Cinebench testing when power limits are removed. Like many other AIO coolers, installing the Cooler Master MasterLiquid LC120L RGB V2 is very easy. It’s as simple as fastening a few screws, and PC builders of all levels will have no issues getting this cooler up and running. Altogether, this cooler offers looks and performance but comes at a relatively high price when compared to other 120mm coolers. However, if you look at its performance, it’s mostly comparable to larger coolers and is, therefore, quite a bargain.

The selling point of the ML120R is its performance. It is one of the best-performing 120mm AIO coolers on the market. Its dual-fan setup allows it to cool more efficiently than some larger coolers and will easily keep the highest performing CPUs, like the Ryzen 9 7950X, incredibly cool even under heavy loads.

If you’re familiar with 120 mm AIOs, you’re probably wondering why a couple of popular CPU coolers from Corsair and NZXT aren’t on our list. While they’re still decent AIOs, we feel that they’re a lot harder to recommend in 2021. Let’s discuss why. Installing this ARTIC cooler is similar to installing many other AIO coolers. ARCTIC doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel here or anything; it’s just some simple screws and applying a bit of thermal paste. The included thumbscrews mean your screwdriver can stay in your bag while you install this cooler, and its small footprint will help it find a home in just about any tower.

The Best 120 mm AIO CPU Coolers

Overall, the Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML120R RGB is arguably the best 120mm AIO cooler on the market. If you can afford the higher price, you’ll be getting your money’s worth with the incredible RGBs and amazing cooling performance. The dual-fan setup is relatively unique and dramatically improves its cooling abilities. While the thermal paste application means installation isn’t quite as beginner-friendly as some other coolers on the market, it’s still a painless process. The VRM fan clearly does something, and temperature improvements will follow the more even FPM on either side of the VRM heatsink, but we also want to be clear that a top-mounted radiator would also benefit the VRM. This is something we simulate in our test setup. VRM Thermals Radiator Dimensions: 157 x 120 x 27mm / 6.2 x 4.7 x 1.1” | Fan Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm / 4.7 x 4.7 x 1” | Fan Speed: 1700 RPM | Noise Volume: Up to 28.3 dBA | Warranty: 5 years As for the price of the MasterLiquid LC120L, this cooler represents a good bargain. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a cooler with more RGB and this level of cooling performance for less money. However, the warranty on this AIO is only 2 years, compared to Corsair’s or ASUS’s 5-year warranty. That might be a deal-breaker for some, as the peace of mind can easily be worth a few dollars more.
