Still, if you’re new to one or more aspects of music production, it’s worth exploring who these devices are — and aren’t — for. The knobs, are my favorite part of the MPK MINI II. Again, these can also be assigned and linked to your favorite VST’s, effects plugins and other controls within your DAW. The knobs are quite sensitive, which I don’t really mind but if you’ve got a heavy hand you can use the dials around each knob to help you stay in control. The keys each have some predefined alternate functions, which will work seamlessly if you use the included software. Mileage varies if you’re using another DAW. Drum Pads

We are pleased to announce that the critically acclaimed MPC Software 2.0 upgrade is now available to The keyboard on theMPK Mini MK2is pretty straightforward: 25 keys equals two full octaves. The keys are velocity-sensitive, so you can capture velocity data in your MIDI projects simply by playing the keys harder or softer. The MPK MK3 features 8 MPC style pads, which have decent travel to them, and are actually the same ones used on the MPC Touch & MPC X – Akai’s premium drum machines! And although there may only look to be 8, log into your DAW and you’ll discover an extra bank, making 16. In other words, they feel like synth keys. That’s a good thing for some. Still, if you’re coming from an acoustic piano, the feel and size will both take some getting used to. If you’re an advanced keyboard player who wants to do virtuosic live or studio work, using two hands at the keyboard and spanning a significant distance, this isn’t the device for you. The two-octave range just isn’t built for that kind of use. You might still find value in having a “one-hand” portable keyboard for MIDI production or even notation work, but it can’t be your main performance instrument.

If you need a backpack-ready controller keyboard, there’s almost too much choice, but Akai's latest is pretty special

Expressive control is handled on the Arturia by a pair of touch strips for pitch bend and modulation, replacing the physical pitch and mod wheels often found on regular synths. These never feel quite as good as the physical thing to us, although one advantage is that you can touch a finger anywhere on a strip and that value will be applied instantly; useful in some cases for applying momentary modulation effects. The Mini MK3 boasts a LED screen too, that shows DAW information, as well as the velocity at which you hit each pad. The Arturia? It has none of that. editing/recording functionality, seamless DAW integration, a redesigned GUI, Ableton Link Compatibility The Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3 is a small but perfectly formed MIDI controller that works great with or without Ableton Live. The Akai MPK Mini does not come with any built-in sounds. It cannot produce sound on its own – you have to plug it into a computer with speakers. It is a MIDI keyboard, not a digital piano.
