About this deal

There is one character that deserves a special mention - Joan Watson, a lady in her 80s. Joan is very much the victim in this book, but such a strong well drawn character that she really stands out.

The story line set in the ex mining village and with glimpses of what life was like during the strike really made an impression on me. Whilst I was still a child myself when it happened, I can still remember watching the news of the strikes and also the impact it had on people. My dad worked in the mining industry and whilst not a miner himself, very much affected him and the company he worked for. Bamburgh Castle materialised on the horizon, its pink-hued stone glowing in the hazy afternoon sun. Like the stuff of legend, of kings and folklore. Spottee’s Cave – Spottee was a foreign sailor who was stranded in Sunderland and lived in the cave. His name came from the spotted shirt he wore, and he was regarded as a lunatic by locals, partly because he did not speak English. He subsisted by scavenging along the coast, begging, and doing manual work. According to the legend, he disappeared into the cave never to be seen again and was regarded by children as a ‘boggle’ (a bogey man or ghost). There was no sex, but it was a good love story. Ryan and Anna were wonderful together. There was also no swearing. The story opens with a chilling death, as Ross’s previous two books have. The location is equally scenic, and the beauty of the place makes the activities of The Circle even worse.Louise was born in Northumberland, England. She studied undergraduate and postgraduate Law at King’s College, University of London and then abroad in Paris and Florence. She spent much of her working life in London, where she was a lawyer for a number of years until taking the decision to change career and pursue her dream to write. Now, she writes full time and lives with her husband and son in Northumberland and Edinburgh. She enjoys reading all manner of books, painting, travelling and spending time with family and friends. Kielder Water and Forest Park: – “They sat side by side on the dewy grass overlooking the new reservoir, surrounded by the familiar faces of friends and neighbours who had turned out to watch the Aurora Borealis set the night sky aflame. They were not disappointed, for the northern lights rose in a kaleidoscope of colour, more beautiful than anything they had ever seen.” There are moments of real tension, where you know that something is about to happen and you wonder just how Ryan and the team will overcome it. There are also more subtle moments which creep up on you. The narrative moves between Ryan and his team, to members of the ‘Circle’, but does so smoothly. And we revisit some characters who we have met before, adding an interesting dimension to the text.

Planetrees Roman Wall An historic landmark, because this is where the wall is at its narrowest. You can’t park here but there is a car park at Chesters Roman Fort and Planetrees is a 30- minute walk from there. As you walk, you’ll probably spot several extras in the novel – well-fed sheep and cows in the nearby fields!Ross publishes all of her works independently through Dark Skies Publishing, a publishing imprint set up and managed by Ross and her husband. [7] Personal life [ edit ] This is a fast paced crime thriller set in the North East of England. The plot is believable and the characters come alive in this setting.

In May 2021, Louise was shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger in the Library’ award, which recognises an author’s entire body of work having been consistently enjoyed by library borrowers around the United Kingdom, and an author’s longstanding support of libraries. Police procedural mystery/romantic suspense series set in Northumbria, England following Detective Chief Inspector Ryan. As a lover of history, I'm always keen to discover and learn about magnificent historical locations and buildings and ancient events and battles. And reading this author's books I always end up on Google as I feel the need to see the places mentioned, and every time, I realise that the online pictures are a mirror image of what I had imagined while reading the book. This shows the author's ability of vividly describing and bringing to life places and sceneries. This time I searched information about Heavenfield church and Bamburgh castle as these are the two focal points in this book. St Mary’s Cathedral– This grand, nineteenth-century Gothic-revival Catholic cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. It was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin in the mid-1840s and in the Monument Garden there is a statue of Cardinal Basil Hume. Wander along nearby Pink Street to grab a coffee, like Ryan and Phillips, or, if you plan to complete the ‘Seven Bridges’ Book Trail, cross the road to look inside Central Station, which was designed by acclaimed local architect John Dobson.
