While there are many types of latches to hold cabinet doors in place, most don’t pull me in. I find protruding mechanisms visually unappealing, and I don’t like the sound of latches hitting each other. So I turn to another method: hidden magnets. Concealed rare-earth magnets provide a pristine look and quiet operation. When done right, the magnets have a subtle grab that makes opening and closing a door a pleasure.

This is the size of the actual Sidelight jamb. When inputting the net frame size you want to put in a number that is at least a half inch less than the rough opening size to allow room to square and level the unit. The door will be built with the sidelight attached so be sure to input the height of the door and the height of the sidelight the same. Example: 48″ X 98″ door with a 18″ X 98″ sidelight will get you a door and sidelight combo that measures 66″ X 98″ (the rough opening size should be somewhere around 66 1/2″ X 98 1/2″). This is the size of the actual Door jamb and Sidelight jamb combined. When inputting the net frame size you want to put in a number that is at least a half inch less than the rough opening size to allow room to square and level the unit. The door will be built with the sidelight as a separate unit so be sure to factor in the 2″ structural post into your net sizes. For example, if you have a 48″ x 96″ door and a 12″ left sidelight, your total unit width would be 48″ door + 2″ post + 12″ sidelight, totaling 52″ in width (the rough opening size should be somewhere around 52 1/2″ X 96 1/2″). If you have a 48″ x 96″ door, a 12″ left sidelight and a 22″ right sidelight, your total unit width would be 12″ sidelight + 2″ post + 4 8″ door + 2″ post + 22″ sidelight, totaling 86″ in width (the rough opening size should be somewhere around 86 1/2″ X 96 1/2″). After the door is built and trimmed to fit, you’re ready to rout the mortise for the magnet. The mortise should be 1⁄8 in. deeper than the magnet’s diameter so you can glue in a plug to conceal the hole. On the edge of the door, lay out the mortise. Inset the mortise at least 1⁄8 in. from the inside face of the door, and mark the length to ensure wiggle room for the 3⁄4-in.-dia. magnet. With the workpiece secured and the router stable, out the mortise. Place a magnet inside and glue a plug in place. Magnet Testing
