About this deal

The MND Association will receive 41% of the money raised to be spent on research projects to take us closer to a world free from MND. The Extra Mile is no ordinary sports memoir. But Kevin Sinfield is no ordinary sportsman. A one-club legend of Leeds Rhinos, who has now crossed codes as a defense coach for Leicester Tigers, Kevin Sinfield is a rugby icon. But in recent years has shown heroism of a very different kind through his selfless and extraordinary fundraising for Motor neurone disease (MND), the terminal illness that has affected his best mate and former teammate Rob Burrow. A one-club legend of Leeds Rhinos, who has now crossed codes as a defence coach for the England national rugby union team, Kevin Sinfield is a rugby icon. But in recent years has shown heroism of a very different kind through his selfless and extraordinary fundraising for motor neurone disease (MND), the terminal illness that has affected his best mate and former teammate Rob Burrow. Sinfield’s epic challenges have included running 7 ultra marathons in 7 days, and running over 101 miles in 24 hours. What started out as a way to help a friend became so much more over the course of those first seven marathons in seven days and has grown incredibly over the subsequent two challenges of the Extra Mile and the Ultra 7 in 7. I think everyone can imagine what they would do for their friend in the same position and the overwhelming support has shown that we are a nation who cares about people who are facing their own adversity.

Where to Find Us The extraordinary memoir of the sporting icon, devoted friend and fundraising hero who has inspired the nation in his fight against MND Richard Frediani, Editor, BBC Breakfast, says: “Kevin’s determination to help his friend was obvious from the day he set off on his first challenge, and it was a huge honour for the BBC Breakfast team to be able to follow him closely on his journey. This documentary highlights how far Kevin has pushed himself to help not only his friends but the thousands of others affected by the disease, it also shows how the last three years have changed him as a person too. We’ve followed him so much he feels like part of the family, and we’re happy to be able to show another side to this extraordinary human being.” Leeds Hospitals Charity will get 41% of the money raised to build a flagship centre for care, through their Rob Burrow Centre for MND Appeal. Kevin’s journey began in 2020, when he ‘just went for a run for a mate’, to support MND charities and raise awareness of people living with the disease. He started by running seven marathons in seven days, but continued to push himself through more physical challenges to raise the much-needed funds and awareness for this cruel and debilitating disease. There are an estimated 5,000 adults in the UK currently living with motor neurone disease. Every day, an average of six people are diagnosed with MND. The MND Association focuses on improving access to care, funding research, and campaigning for those people living with, or affected by, MND. Sinfield continues to be a leader on and off the field, through his fundraising and now as defence coach for the England national rugby union team. He is one of the few individuals who has successfully crossed rugby codes. In autumn 2022, Sinfield embarked on his hardest endurance challenge yet, running 7 ultra marathons in 7 days, and raising almost ?2 million for MND in the process. In May 2023 he will run the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds marathon, which he helped to found. I'm alright. I've been buoyed by the support, it's been incredible and the money we're raising is fantastic. I've not really gone into that dark zone yet, I think that's still to come, and I'm looking forward to the battle ahead," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Aged 14, Sinfield met a 12-year-old Rob Burrow at rugby league side Leeds Rhinos. Twenty-eight years later, they are still firm friends after a glittering career in which Sinfield became the Rhinos' most successful captain, winning seven Super League titles. He helped me a bit. I was explaining to him about rugby union: it's always a contest for the ball, you can lose the ball at any time. Kevin Sinfield played rugby league for Leeds Rhinos, England and Great Britain Guinness Six Nations - England v France The Monday Night Club discuss whether Jude Bellingham is England's best talent since Paul Gascoigne, after he was named best young player at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony. He continued: "A big part of the challenge is mental. There's physical parts of it that are going to hurt and be horrible, but I think mentally every hour some of it is going to be torturous." What he and a small group of friends, along with the wider sporting family, did has changed the landscape for this awful disease. So far he has raised over seven million pounds, ensuring his friend's family will be taken care of as well as enabling scientists to begin serious research into finding a cure and improving the quality of life for many others. Sinfield and Burrow shared an unbreakable bond as players with Leeds Rhinos, winning every trophy there was to win and solidifying themselves as giants of the game. Yet in the two years since Burrow was diagnosed with the disease, that bond has strengthened further. It is not difficult to see why. “To my amazing friend Kev, you don’t realise the impact you have had on me and the whole MND community,” Burrow said as they sat alongside each other.
