About this deal

Afterwards she’s given a new identity-- Milly--and is sent to live with her London psychologist, Mike Newmont, and his family.

The fact is, she was unable to help any of the children, and the last murder was just too much for Annie to bear, because she was very close to the victim. Thank you, Michael Joseph Ltd and Ali Land for providing an advanced copy of this book for me to read in exchange for my honest review. It's rare to come across a book you can't stop thinking about, talking about and pushing it into the hands of everyone you know. Milly can’t let go of her mother and she is acutely aware that her mother was grooming her to be just like herself. I could understand that her case warrants someone with his skill-set because of the severity of the trauma she’s been through, but I still didn’t believe that she’d necessarily be placed with him.

I think this is a very good debut novel and I am already looking forward to reading more from Ali Land. Mercifully, Ms Land does not go into much explicit detail concerning the torture and murder of the boys, beyond occasional references (‘the playground’; ‘little somethings’). Whenever I read anything that predicts a book is predicted to be the next biggest novel of the year, I tend to not raise my expectations too much. The theme of Motherhood parades strongly across the text- Phoebe and Saskia, Millie and her Mum, Saskia and Millie, it's there that idea that women support and nurture women, but it's tarnished, it's imperfect- even in a seemingly "perfect" home.

You are never sure if Milly is a reliable narrator, especially because she straight up admits she struggles with being good and bad.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Penguin UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for a honest review.

The first person narrative is captivating and unique, it allows for a short direct sentence structure and enables lengthy description to be abandoned and replaced by snappy impulsive griping words that delve deep in to Millie's mind. Good Me Bad Me reveals its shocking secrets slowly while reeling in the reader with all the intricate skill of a spider spinning a web. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This thriller gives readers a new angle to explore in psychological thriller and it’s every bit as good as reading from the killer’s perspectives. Since I tend to like books with twisted and disturbing characters and stories, this one worked for me! This assured novel is perhaps born from the many years of experience and knowledge gleaned from Land’s time working as a mental health nurse with children and adolescents.
