About this deal

Your successes and failures, encounters and challenges can affect the entire group raising the ante and fueling interaction. The detail is really good but the cuts aren’t as deep as you’d see with metal or resin figures which are utilized in dedicated miniatures games though. You’ll increase your ability statistics, optimize your equipment, and even interject your own personality into the character, as you interact with NPCs and make decisions within the world around you. Part boardgame, part role-playing, I found the world and game play of Folklore to be extremely enjoyable. In reality though, they are an expression, a manifestation of, a cultural fear of physical corruption and death.

The capabilities of each hero is detailed in their booklet while their over-sized character cards indicate their attributes, keywords, and vitality trackers. Dying in Folklore is not the end for your character… dead characters play on as their ghost with ethereal powers to strike down your foes from beyond the grave. Yeah, it’s mostly just rolling dice, but turn your brain off and your imagination on and you’ll love it.

dead characters play on as their ghost with ethereal powers to strike down your foes from beyond the grave. At other times the players will be instructed by the journal to use one of the adventure maps for the encounter and that’s where the real heavy hitting monster butt kickin’ comes in.

Throw in a vaguely eastern European fantasy setting with gothic touches, vampires and werewolves, and I’m sold. Folklore takes alot of inspiration from these RPGs and does a good job of making the planning of your journey a fun element. As someone who’d love to paint these up, to dazzle people when they sit down at my table, there’s far too much give in the plastic which is readily apparent in the swords, staffs, and other thin appendages on the figures.Free the denizens from the scourge of vampirism and lycanthropy and expand your power and abilities. They also add bonuses based on facing, outnumbering the enemy, moving out of an enemy's threat area, and more.

No board or computer game can perform the same fly by the seat of the pants sort of game mastering, in my opinion, a good roleplaying game session requires. Steve and I spent just a small amount of time being prepped on the mechanisms and instead jumped straight into the world. Characters have their own branching ability tree they will unlock as they level up, but even more interesting, each character has a special set of things they can do when visiting towns that is unique to that class of character. These negative statuses often require dumb luck to remove or significant amounts of money to remove.Keep in mind the players don’t choose one of these things to do but may perform all of these actions. The characters are unorthodox, you will not find your traditional warrior, archer, or mage, instead you will find characters pulled mostly from European folklore (hence the name). I must admit I was ooooohhh sssooooo close to awarding Folklore a rarefied ten as its review score, as it’s that good, but one small aspect held me back. Just don’t come in expecting something as thoroughly developed as what you may expect in a proper tabletop RPG or in the Witcher games/books.
