I liked, admired, disliked and was annoyed by each of the characters, and normally that doesn’t make for a good book for me, but this one worked!
There is also a lot in the book about income inequality disparity—the gaps between the wealthy and the not-so-wealthy—and the class differences. He is described as a native of New York, who moves to Palm Beach and joins its police department to deal with criminals, murderers, and other culprits. I loved how it was in my own backyard, I knew where they where coming/going, as Palm Beach is just a short trip away from my own home.
She was the one that always taught me the importance of chocolates and sweets on the table, not even just for dessert. Highlights of the catalog include an exceptionally rare original Rembrandt Peale oil portrait of George Washington, a scarce first edition of one of the most significant books published in America: The Federalist, a first edition of The Great Gatsby lengthily inscribed by F.
The last quarter of the book really did not work for me -- the surprise conflict didn't feel earned and it was resolved way too quickly. As the authors’ year unfolds, they also provide a finely-painted portrait of Palm Beach, from the mega yachts, mansions, and millionaires to laws that forbid dogs from barking or dictate the height of one’s lawn. Something this book does do very well is capture the complexity of human relationships and moral “high ground”.
