About this deal

When the police investigate, they learn both Bertine and Susanne had Marcus Røed as a sugar daddy. In addition, shortly before they disappeared, Bertine and Susanne attended a party thrown by Røed - a party where liquor and cocaine flowed freely. This makes Røed a person of interest in the homicides, and Røed hopes Harry Hole will finger someone else.

I really really really wanted to love this one. I’ve read and enjoyed several of Nesbo’s crime thrillers but unfortunately, his attempt at horror was a big fail for me.

No, I didn't like this one at all. This book was so terrible that I almost wonder if Jo Nesbø wrote it to punish his publishers. Or his fans. He'll need to bring together a misfit team of former operatives to do what he can't do alone: stop an unstoppable killer. But as the evidence mounts, it becomes clear that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Jo Nesbø non sbaglia un colpo e Harry Hole è sempre il migliore, nonostante sia precipitato in una spirale autodistruttiva da cui non vuole uscire. Two young women are missing. Strangers to each other, but last seen at the same party. When the body of one of them is found with fresh stitches along her hairline, the hunt is on to find a murderer with singular methods.

Similar to most books in this series, the tone is dark. Themes involve drug abuse, sexual abuse, rape, and physical assault. Niente era cambiato. Tutto era cambiato. Non c’era modo di tornare indietro. E non c’era nemmeno modo di non tornare indietro.” In past interviews, Nesbo has said that it’s important that he depicts the murders of women in his fiction because it’s an honest reflection of what happens in the real world. I’d counter with this question: Where is the value in perpetuating the idea of women as victims, in need of a mediocre old man to play hero? Harry Hole si è trasferito a Los Angeles con un piano: bere fino alla morte in un posto lontano dopo la devastante morte della moglie Rakel. Then, at about the 3/4 mark, Nesbo does something to pull the proverbial rug out from under the reader. Then, somewhere on the 7/8 mark, he does it again. Trust me, I want to tell you all about it, but I can’t because that would be spoiling it.

The Harry Hole Series in Order

This is a hard book to review. I read it all the way through. There were certainly parts I enjoyed, but also lots of “come on—really?” parts. Well, Henrik Ibsen was mandatory reading when you went to school in Norway, and at that young age he felt old and boring. It was only later, when I was living a life where I could relate, that I started reading him. I went on to read all of his plays, every one of them, and realised what a great entertainer he is. I have seen where Stephen King sits when he is writing and it is exactly the same. He has this big house and he goes into this small room that looks like a closet and he can write there. Not just an unbearably tense thriller but another of Nesbo's studies in love and loneliness... there are few greater crime writers The Times, Crime Book of the Month Then there is a wealthy prime suspect for whom this negative publicity is not financially sound. So he wants the best there is to prove his innocence.
