About this deal

This industry leader was one of the first to put Scotch whisky on the map, with a range of smooth, fruity, honeyed offerings that remain firm favorites across the world, no matter how many new distilleries enter the space. Palate: Orange hits the tongue first. It is light and supple before turning peppery and warm. Initially, I get a sweetness of marzipan, but then it turns slightly sour. The finish is bitter similar to a high percentage dark chocolate. It is here that they are matured for 10 years in a range of ex-bourbon casks, such as the famous slow-grown and air-dried ‘designer casks’ from Missouri. These designer casks are used to develop the raw spirit to achieve a perfect balance between sweetness and complexity. This results in a mature spirit that is soft, mellow and creamy.

The classic Glenmorangie style as epitomised by Glenmorangie 10 majors on fresh fruit like oranges and peaches burnished with sweet American oak. Whisky creator Dr. Bill Lumsden is fond of saying that “that the orangey is morangey in Glenmorangie”, as a way of communicating the core flavour profile and how to pronounce the distillery name. Some distilleries reuse their casks as many as six times, but Glenmorangie has a firm “twice only” rule. A large amount of the whisky’s depth and complexity can be attributed to these casks and Glenmorangie will almost always be revered as being one of the first to put this into practice. As one of the pioneers of this technique, as well as pioneers of the Scotch industry as a whole, it’s fair to say that buying a bottle of Glenmorangie will never be a bad idea. Glenmorangie 10 year old is the flagship bottle of the Glenmorangie range. It is an elegant, floral and spirited 10 year old single malt. The 10 year old is produced by marrying the delicate spirit that emerges from Scotland’s tallest stills, with first and second fill American white oak casks. On the palate you can immediately detect vanilla on the tongue before it ripples along the mouth bringing a burst of flowery fruitiness which is then followed by the finish which hits about a minute after tasting. The Finish leaves you with a clean and salving aftertaste with hints of orange and peach, the perfect end to a succulent 10 year old. But the ‘80s and ‘90s saw a gradual move away from blends to concentrate on single malts. For many years, the 10 Year Old expression was the only one bottled by the distillery but in 1987 Glenmorangie released a 1963 vintage single malt which was finished in oloroso sherry casks. This was followed in the early ‘90s by a Port cask-finished whisky and then a plethora of other cask finishes like Madeira, sherry and Sauternes. The switch to single malts was completed in 2014 when the Bailie Nicol Jarvie was discontinued. Innovative: if there’s one word that best describes Glenmorangie, it’s that. And for many reasons, starting from its seriously tall towering stills that are proudly described firstly as being the tallest in Scotland and secondly as being the same height as a fully grown giraffe. If you’re looking to go all out, you can even bring out the pipette for dropping in more water throughout your drinking experience. If you’re looking to mix your Glenmorangie, keep it simple with club soda, water, or ginger ale to begin with. MOM: Is this increasing ‘democratization’ behind the decision to create X by Glenmorangie, as well as the ‘delicious and wonderful’ brand positioning? Glenmorangie claims that it is made as it always has been by the ‘16 men of Tain’ but one name more than any other is synonymous with the distillery today: the aforementioned Dr Bill Lumsden. He was the distillery manager from 1995 to 1998, and from then head of distilling and whisky creation for everything in the Glenmorangie Company’s portfolio. Under Dr Lumsden the cask finishes continued such as Sauternes barrel Nectar D'Or, Port cask The Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old and sherry-finished Lasanta 12 Year Old. He’s also been at the forefront of experimentation earlier in the whisky making stage with products like Signet made using chocolate malt, Cadboll made with single estate barley, and A Tale of the Forest which uses barley kilned with botanicals.Glenmorangie has used the same casks since its beginning, made from slow-growth American white oak from north-facing slopes in Missouri. It remained under the same ownership for the next 90 years, but Glenmorangie still suffered from the ups and downs that plagued the industry throughout the 20th century. The American market was particularly important for Macdonald & Muir with their Highland Queen blended whisky, named after Mary Queen of Scots. Consequently, Glenmorangie struggled throughout Prohibition, which came into force in 1919, and the distillery closed in 1931, only to reopen in 1936.
