About this deal

Knowing what I did about Putin and Russia, I was sure it wouldn’t be. “I’ll keep my things, thank you,” I responded.

In 2018, Browder was named the 67th most powerful person in the world by Worth magazine. The magazine noted, "Browder has become one of the biggest thorns in Putin's side—and appears to be a key reason Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election." [66] I learnt a tremendous amount here about Russian money laundering and the Magnitsky act, all of it interesting but I would have loved a more objective account. This statement would seem to suggest I don't trust the author's view on things, which is not the case. But rather I feel fewer mentions of family skiing vacations in Aspen and all the trans-continental jet setting might have made space for some more interesting analysis. You notice odd things when adrenaline hits you. I noticed there was a light out at the far end of the hall, and that there was a small stain on the manager’s lapel. I also noticed that the manager didn’t look so much contrite as concerned. I could tell this wasn’t for me. What concerned him was that his presidential suite would be unavailable so long as it contained my belongings. He wanted my things out as soon as possible. The Washington Post and The New York Times rated Putin's claim about the funding "false," noting that there is no evidence to substantiate it. [78] [79] Politifact gave it a "pants on fire" rating. [80] Bill Browder, in his own article for Time, called the accusation "so ludicrous and untrue that it falls into delusion." He maintains that Putin continues to make false allegations against him in response to Browder's involvement with the Magnitsky Act. Browder also says that he is a British citizen and no longer American, therefore Trump would be unable to respond to Putin's request. [81] Der Spiegel articles [ edit ]There is also discussion of Putin's relationship with Trump that leads to Browder's fear that even traveling to the US for him may no longer be safe because of Russian efforts to have him arrested and sent to Russia. Browder has been sentenced in absentia to many years in jail for crimes he did not commit. I then called Ruperto, my Spanish lawyer who’d arranged the meeting with Prosecutor Grinda. No answer there, either.

Browder is to be commended for his bravery in standing up to one of the worst human rights abusers in the world. What a different world this would be if we all displayed such courage. One of the most impactful takeaways from this book is that none of this could happen without western enablers and the acquiescence of timid and ineffective governments that refuse to follow their own laws and values. You can see this clearly today. Especially in light of current events, this book is a must read that takes a look the psyche of Putin and his horrific regime. The officers heard me. The driver jerked the car to the side of the road. Both men jumped out. My door opened, and the larger officer hauled me onto the street. He aggressively patted me down and confiscated both of my phones. The Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful. This was already the world Bill Browder lived in as a founder of Hermitage Capital Management, a successful hedge fund based in Moscow in the early 2000s. He has recounted those years in his bestselling 2015 exposé Red Notice, some of whose content overlaps with this book, mainly the murder of his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in a Moscow prison in 2009. Browder had been expelled from Russia four years before and evacuated most of his team to London, but Magnitsky insisted on staying. (Worth noting, in the current circumstances, that Magnitsky was Ukrainian by birth, born in Odesa.) Spiegel Responds to Browder Criticisms of Magnitsky Story". Der Spiegel. 17 December 2019. It's led to many murders and attempted murders. It's been clearly documented (the book has astoundingly detailed source material citations). It's led to many acts of cybercrime and harassment (see review linked) against those trying to stop the actual stealing and killing. I'm not one for political books but found this one fascinating. Browder does an excellent job of setting up his story of the Magnitsky Act and it reads like it was a fictional murder mystery. Except it all happened! I mean some of the stuff would be laughed at if written for a movie - like the attorney who fought the good fight but eventually becomes corrupted by Russian money is named . . . Moscow. Sections of this book are mind blowing.

But at that moment, something shifted in their demeanor. One officer stepped very close to me while the other made a frantic call on his cell phone. He spoke into the phone for a couple of minutes and, after hanging up, typed something. He showed it to me. Google Translate. It read, “Medical exams standard protocol.”
