About this deal

The parasitic nematode, Phasmarhabditis sp. is used as a non-chemical means of control. These nematodes are harmless to plants, pets and the wider environment. It uses the nematode Phasmarhabditis californica and controls all common species of small to medium sized slugs (up to 8cm - 2.5-3 inches). The RHS also plans to test alternative control methods, such as beer traps, and is currently working with BASF to investigate ways to combine scientifically proven control methods into pest management strategies. Help us do more research Gavin Wood, from BASF, Europe’s largest producer of nematodes for use in pest control, and a partner in the research says: 'These early results are useful, in year two we hope to be able to differentiate between damage caused by slugs and snails, as nematodes are not effective against the latter.

Slugs are so abundant in gardens that some damage has to be tolerated. They cannot be eradicated so targeting control measures to protect particularly vulnerable plants, such as seedlings and soft young shoots on herbaceous plants will give the best results. Non-chemical control Biological control They also don’t like exposure to UV, so applying in the early morning or in the evening is recommended. How To Apply Slug Nematodes Slug Nematodes No, the Nematodes are safe to use around all wildlife, animals and children, except the pest they are targeting. Pets and children can access the area straight after Nematodes have been applied without causing any harm to themselves. As existing lab studies have shown some of the barriers work, and as other experiments by Hayley hinted that copper tape could be effective, she’s not ruling the barriers out completely. She hopes to run the study again ona different slug population and different soil type at RHS Garden, Harlow Carr in 2019.

Slugs also love young green growth. So wait to plant out seedlings until they are mature and resistant. We are happy to continue to sponsor the second and final year of the trial and remain confident about the slug control provided by nematodes. We will work closely with the RHS and look closely at the protocols for the 2017 trials.' Further information Slug Killer Nematodes should be applied as soon as Slugs have been identified in the soil. The best application times are from Spring to Autumn. How Many Nematodes Do I Need? Nemaslug uses the nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita. One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of soil, giving at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established.

When to apply Nemaslug outdoors:

There are many other, cheaper, alternative slug control measures that work in a more peaceful and sustainable way. They arrive in a sachet suspended in a paste. It is best to use them straight away, however, you can store them in the fridge for up to a few weeks (do not freeze). Question: Will slug nematodes control all slugs? They control all common species of small to medium sized slugs up to 8 cm (approx. 3 inches).

In the second year of the study we will try to answer some of the questions generated by these results. We will look at the treatments with and without mulch, so we can better understand how the mulch interacts with the pesticides and nematodes.' You can buy nematodes online. However, they aren't necessarily cheap and you do need to follow the very precise instructions on how to use them. How to use nematodes If you apply Nemaslug in the early autumn you will reduce the number of slugs laying eggs and consequently reduce the new population emerging in the spring.

What if I want to use Nemaslug in my greenhouse?

Nematodes are recommended for use whenever larvae or grubs are present. Generally, this is during spring and autumn. One advantage is that their efficacy against field slugs has been clearly demonstrated, and nematodes have been approved as being beneficial in organic farming. Copper tape/rings - copper gives a natural electric charge that repels both slugs and snails. Tape is useful around pots and legs of greenhouse staging.

Inclusion of a pesticide product does not indicate a recommendation or endorsement by the RHS. It is a list of products currently available to the home gardener The high levels of slug and snail damage found on the plants protected by mulch was unexpected, especially as many mulches are billed as being repellent to slugs and snails. It is possible that the negative impact of the mulch affected the effectiveness of the other control treatments when they were combined. How do snails reproduce? Snails are hermaphrodite and take up to 2 hours to mate. They lay a batch of about 80 spherical pearly-white eggs into crevices in the topsoil or sheltered under stones. In a year it may lay six batches or so. That's nearly 500 young snails, which will take one or two years to reach maturity.

Why does the nematode biological control ( Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) work for some gardeners but not all? Working with collaborators at Liverpool John Moores University we are testing survival of P. hermaphrodita in different soil types and under different conditions. TIP: Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied Nemaslug. Even if nighttime temperatures drop below 5ºC (40ºF), the soil will retain much of the daytime heat. Ant Nematodes encourage ants to move their nests elsewhere as ants cannot tolerate the nematodes being near their nest.
