About this deal

She shines mostly in the performance of some characters, especially when there is humor and histrionics involved.

If they pull off the deception and make it to the altar, they can choose to either accept prize money or get married for real. i’ve never went through the difficulty of hiding parts of myself out of fear of losing my family but i think chencia did a beautiful job with explaining d’vaughn’s story to the readers. I do have a couple of criticisms: The first handful of chapters were all somewhere around 30 pages and that’s just a personal pet peeve of mine.

This is my first time reading about a Black lesbian couple in my twenty-four years of life and ugh I needed this. The two are paired up and have to convince their family and friends that they’re getting married in six weeks. Especially with D'Vaughn being insecure and plagued by doubt, but those were resolved in a way that I appreciated, with gentle reassurance and adult conversations.

D’Vaughn and Kris meet through the reality TV show Instant I Do, which pairs up contestants who’ve never met and gives them six weeks to convince their loved ones they’re getting married, all while actually planning a wedding.I liked the concept of this book very much, the idea of a fake relationship in the context of a reality TV show is something I haven’t seen before.

As they negotiate the drama that wedding planning always entails, the chemistry between them intensifies, and both wonder if they’ll simply be able to walk away at the end of six weeks.Sometimes it dragged, just slightly, I think because of the lack of outside drama like I mentioned before. As I said above, this book has a few sentences in Spanish and even though the narrator doesn’t sound like a native speaker she does a good job. This was a sweet and romantic story, full of memorable characters, reality show moments, a bit of steam, and the tentative steps toward love. Rebecca Lee gives a spirited performance of this fun, low-angst love story about two Black women who meet on a reality TV show during which they have to plan a wedding and convince both their families it’s real. There’s also a really fantastic conversation that takes place between Kris and D’Vaughn’s mother in regards to Afro-Latinx folks being a part of the Black diaspora that needs to happen more often.
