About this deal

Raw sewage was discharged into English rivers 825 times a day last year, according to Environment Agency data. More unusually, the co-claimants have resurrected an ancient common law as one of their grounds for bringing the case. The talk began with Maugham getting candid with the audience when he reflected on his life from childhood to tax lawyer to founding the Good Law Project.

Just managed to recover my breath enough from the opening sentence to actually go read the review and now losing it again because of the cover. The type of work has varied massively but the work hasn't been regular enough and often has me in different locations all over England at very late notice which isn't ideal. In Bringing Down Goliath, Jolyon Maugham shares his inspiration and his purpose, and he reveals the story behind these landmark cases and the hidden fault lines of our judiciary system. I really hope at least one and preferably all 3 of his big projects to fruition and I look forward to seeing more actions. They claim that the government’s ‘Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan’ is unlawful as it gives water company bosses until 2050 to stop the mass discharges of sewage. I studied electrical engineering at collage and would prefer to work within the electrical industry, however I am open to anything and am willing to learn and know I will have to start at the very bottom and work my way up the ladder.

this book offers a peak into a very nasty can of worms of unchecked power but offers hope that there still libertarians willing to stand up for what is right and just. Maugham remembers this to be his connection with the working class, that he reveals he can now no longer connect with in his place of privilege. From the introductory quote of “justice is open to all – like the Ritz Hotel” to the conclusion quote of “The world is in a bad state, but everything will become worse unless each of us does his best. I was in a lonely part of the wilderness through the Brexit period, trying to persuade people that the vote demonstrated a need for radical constitutional reform. Page after page, we are treated to ponderous declarations and clumsy narrations, some of which literally make no sense.

The judges will decide whether the firm can be subject to private legal action over these discharges, in this case from the canal’s owner. If adhering to the rules should frustrate a political goal he dislikes, he insists upon it; if adhering to procedure frustrates it, he condemns judges’ inability to look beyond a case in isolation. Jolyon Maugham KC founded Good Law Project in 2017 with the belief that the law can also put power in the hands of ordinary people. In particular, the chapter on the PPE procurement scandal is breathtaking, even for those of us who thought we knew the facts. In 2021, after a period of sustained attack on what was asserted by right-wing think tanks to be overreach by judges, the equivalent figure slumped to one in fifty.

With astonishing panache and determination, Jolyon Maugham has taken on some of the most powerful and corrupt interests in the UK - and won. In Bringing Down Goliath , he makes other comments about the integrity of the judiciary which will anger colleagues. The explanation for these contradictions is simply that, to Maugham, ideology is the first condition of judging, and the law is merely an instrumentality to achieve his preferred political ends.

After Mr Justice Swift refuses the Good Law Project permission to challenge Brexit, Maugham accuses two High Court judges of pro-government bias. I'm sometimes asked how to handle bad reviews and usually answer along the lines of, 'we've all had them and it's never fun.

He talks of how his adolescent hardships led him to have conventional aspirations that led him to become a tax lawyer, as he desperately wanted to fit in.Maugham is not against wide judicial power — he wants judges to use a political end goal as justification to unilaterally abrogate Parliamentary sovereignty, yet he also thinks that judges put right-wing political ends ahead of following the law. A really important book shedding light on some of the major legal and constitutional issues we as a country face at the moment.
