About this deal

Box grows wild in Mediterranean garrigue conditions, so can obviously withstand severe drought once the plants are established (see 'water' below). Moist, well-drained conditions produce maximum growth. It will not grow in permanently water-logged soil. All of these choices offer a good nutritional profile and slow-release fertiliser for these plants.

Topiary shears are more precise than hedge shears, and allow you to support growth with one hand, while working with the other. Their wide blades offer superior precision, and a much neater finish for regular pruning of crisp Buxus plants. Pretty much every commercially grown Buxus plant is grown from cuttings. They take a long time from seed, and it’s simply not worth it. To take cuttings at home, allow a few stems to grow out beyond the main body of the hedge in spring, so you’ve got healthy material to work with.Fertilize your buxus twice a year. Use a balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10 and apply it in the spring and fall. Phytophthora species are microscopic fungus like organisms found in the soil that cause root and stem base decay of plants. It is usually found in soils that are heavy and waterlogged and can infect trees, woody plants and vegetables. Symptoms Some products are sent direct from our suppliers and as such are not available for Nominated Day Delivery. These include: Do not water overhead as soil based watering is better; watering heavily once a week and not daily, allowing the foliage to dry out between watering’s;

Regular maintenance and inspection can nip infections in the bud by pruning out infected areas as soon as possible and treating to encourage new growth. Infections left untreated may make plants unsightly or even kill them. All Buxus species prefer well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Avoid free-draining sandy soils by adding plenty of manure, and improve clay soils in the same way, making sure to break the soil down well before adding any soil improvers. For hedging–prepare the planting trench by thoroughly digging over the soil to a spade's depth and up to 90cm (3ft) wide. This will help the roots to spread out easily. Feeding your box plant is essential for healthy growth when it is kept in a container, and something you may wish to do, but is not strictly necessary, if your topiary is planted in the ground.Box plants in containers are highly susceptible to winter damage so to protect them a bit more, mulch the roots with dead leaves and wood chips and you can also wrap the foliage of young plants in burlap. Cow manure is great for Buxus plants especially during winter because it will mulch the roots from frost damage and keep the foliage of your Buxus plant vibrant throughout winter. What kind of soil do boxwoods need?
