About this deal

This is impossible!’ cried Rose. ‘You can’t be serious, Frances! I’m the star! Does no one care that I’m being threatened?’

Fresh from their adventure in Hong Kong, Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells are off to the Rue Theatre in London to face an entirely new challenge: acting. Do be quiet, all of you,’ said Miss Crompton, frowning. ‘I need to think. With Theresa ill, there’s going to be a lot of extra work to do.’ Miss Wong, are you sure you would like a part?’ asked Miss Crompton. Without stopping her scribbling, Bridget turned to stare at me, lips pursed. I wanted to sink down into my seat, but then I saw Daisy up on the stage. Her arms were folded and she was trying to look commanding, but she only succeeded in looking at me rather pleadingly.

We pattered up some steps, and then turned left into a twisting flight of stone stairs. They stretched away both above and below us, wrapped round a narrow lift. Up and up we went, and came out on a low, narrow, gas-lit corridor with lots of doors opening to the right of us. My heart lifted a little, for this reminded me rather of the smaller Deepdean corridors, dark and full of bits of old furniture.

Martita shrugged. ‘She’s said worse to me and Simon before,’ she said. ‘And anyway – families can be horrible. Even the families you make yourself – they betray you. Sometimes you have to protect yourself.’ He pointed out the actors who would be playing the Montagues and the Capulets, Paris, the apothecary – and at last he introduced Rose. As he did so, it was as though a bright light had been thrown on her. It was clear that she was the star. Have a look at those,’ said Aunt Lucy, ‘and then begin to go through this exercise book. Solve what you can, and bring your work to me this afternoon.’ Even her,’ said Daisy. ‘She’s being nice to Rose because she’s the star, but Rose’s complaining is beginning to wear thin. Just you wait and see.’Uncle Felix is just the same as he ever was. He is a fascinating and quite unnerving person, tall and golden like Daisy, and extremely clever too. He has a monocle that he has a habit of screwing into place over his eye and peering at me through, and he has an immensely important and secret job that we are not supposed to know anything about. I am not discussing this any more,’ said Miss Crompton firmly, as though Martita was no older than us. ‘Anyway, it will help with your part. You will be a lovely Nurse, darling, and Rose will be a lovely Juliet. Inigo and I agree that making the Nurse and Juliet the same age is a very powerful class statement. Now, I’d better introduce you all. Daisy, Hazel, this is Martita Torrera.’ Partly this was my fault. The first few days of our rehearsals at the Rue reminded me of what I already knew: that, although I have been getting better and better at being myself, even the thought of pretending to be someone else still sends me into hot and cold horrors. As Potpan, I forgot how to move my hands and feet. I forgot what to do with my face, and how to open my mouth and allow words out. Someone’s THREATENING ME!’ cried Rose. Her face was pink with anger. She had something in her hands, a square of white card, and she thrust it at Miss Crompton. That is information you are taking care of,’ said Daisy. ‘If I spent time learning it too, I would simply be wasting the space in my brain. Anyway, Hazel, that’s why I know all about Miss Crompton and the Rue. She’s quite brilliant – she bought it up twenty years ago when it was failing and she’s absolutely made it the place to see Shakespeare. She’s worked with Inigo Leontes and Linda Torrence – and now she’ll be working with Daisy Wells! And Hazel Wong, of course. Really, though, I do think she could have found you a better part than the silly servant Potpan!’

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Death in the Spotlight by Robin Stevens , read by Katie Leung. Do you think that tiara is a little much, though?’ asked Rose thoughtfully. ‘I’m sure it’s not, but—’ Of course it’s real!’ snapped Rose. ‘How dare you! I bet you’re the one behind it. You’re trying to frighten me off, all because I’m the star and you’re not.’ It’s a stage name,’ said Martita sulkily, folding her arms. ‘Not real. I’m actually Portuguese, not Spanish.’ But, when we ran into the dressing room, we found Rose perfectly all right, and only bleeding from a long, deep cut on her right heel. Annie rushed to get the medical kit from Wardrobe, dabbed Rose’s foot with brown iodine and wrapped it tightly in soft white gauze. The only son of your great enemy— What is it? What do you want?’ she called, spinning round and putting her hands on her hips. Blast,’ said Daisy. ‘They must have been paid to do it. But by who? It’s not as though we can narrow down Rose’s enemies, either! Anyone at the Rue might want to upset her.’ Don’t be awful, Daisy!’ I said, although privately I agreed with her. Lysander had made me uncomfortable. He stood too close to people and stared at them for too long, and there was an angry energy to him that I did not like. You’re quite right, I look seventy,’ said Martita gloomily. ‘It’s all Rose’s fault. I didn’t come to England to be a character actress!’
