It would be unfair to expect a large-capacity air fryer to be small and not take up significant worktop space, but the shape and dimensions of the Tower Vortx make it particularly bulky. The air fryer comes with six pre-set modes for different meals, and the Smart Finish control can auto-adjust cooking times, guaranteeing that both baskets complete cooking simultaneously. The best models will have a number of basics you should look out for. These include weight and temperature settings, so you can adjust the heat and cook time to suit your ingredients. Another, smaller, issue surrounds the learning curve. If you’re new to air frying, you might not find this model particularly intuitive to use; there are a lot of symbols and quirks to get your head around. Unfortunately, this isn’t helped by slightly confusing instructions. While all of the information you need is there, the layout isn’t very logical, which contributes to making the Vortx Duo more difficult to use from the get-go than it should be. Air fryer technology is improving all the time. Older models might take a while to get going, and can require more oil than newer designs. Cheaper models may also require you to parboil chips, which might not be ideal if you’re looking for fast cooking times.

The Vortx Eco is so much more than just an air fryer. It can roast succulent meat joints, air fry crispy chips and potatoes, bake cakes and pies, and it can even grill juicy steaks. The 4 cooking methods that this air fryer offers make dinner time easy. With 8 one-touch presets to choose from, it takes all the guesswork out of cooking. In our testing, the FlexDrawer proved to be just as efficient as the Dual Zone and we found the addition of the removable divider incredibly useful. Foods cooked faster and more evenly than in both our oven and some other models of air fryer. It’s an excellent all rounder for large capacity cooking. To switch between each preset, you have to press the Preset Selection key. It would be more intuitive if you could simply touch the desired icon, but this is a minor complaint.

Its compact dimensions will fit neatly into smaller kitchens or onto already crowded countertops, and the controls couldn’t be simpler: two physical dials allow you to set the cooking temperature between 80ºC and 200ºC and set a timer of up to 30 minutes. For instance, the Chips preset for the smaller basket is set at 200°C/390°F for 20 minutes, or 25 minutes at the same temperature in the larger basket. Though the construction features thin stainless steel sections and plastic handles that may not offer an optimal feel, this is not just an air fryer, as it does not compromise the flavour of the food.Good models will come with dishwasher-safe removable parts and a pull-out loading tray that slots into the machine. For easy cooking from the get-go, look out for models with preset functions for popular dishes too. These work out the timings and temperatures for you. I was seriously impressed with the results from the Vortx Duo. However, if you can afford to bump your budget a little higher and don’t mind sacrificing some capacity or those grill plates, the 7.6L Ninja Foodi Dual Zone remains my preferred choice. The results aren’t that much different but the design and build quality is a little better and it generally feels a bit nicer to use. We noticed that shaking the basket a few times during cooking gave us the best results. This ensured that every bit of the surface area became golden brown, providing the same delicious fried taste.
