About this deal

Right out of the gate, notice three things from Jesus’s teaching about this enigmatic creature he called the devil.

J.T. Thomas is one in a million. Courageous, peace-filled, convicted - J.T. is the founder of Civil Righteousness and a true peacemaker, living at the intersection of Jesus’ teachings and activism. Join the two of them for a conversation on generational trauma, the spiritual realities that fuel racial injustice & how to build a response to racism that’s informed by the way of Jesus. When combined with spiritual practices, this mentality can help Christians stay on the right path and become more like Jesus. Spiritual practices help Christians gain control over their desires. Most people fail in the art of living not because they are inherently bad or so without will that they cannot lead a better life; they fail because they do not wake up and see when they stand at a fork in the road and have to decide.14”

of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars Live No Lies: Recognize and Resist the Three Enemies That Sabotage Your Peace by John Mark ComerThe tables are turned, and John Mark sits down in the hot seat for today’s interview. Join him and his good friend, and pastoral successor, Tyler Staton for a conversation on the story behind writing a book on the world, the flesh and the devil. But of course, the two of them end up talking about all sorts of even more interesting subjects. Of course, it’s not always easy to distinguish lies from the truth, and it can be even harder to let go of these illusions. But, for a follower of Jesus, it’s absolutely essential to identify and reject lies. It’s the only way to live a good Christian life and be happy. Today, I’m developing new practices, courses, and podcasts for Practicing the Way and serving as a teacher in residence at Vintage Church LA with my wife Tammy and our three kids: Jude, Moses, and Sunday.

Anxious to avoid a repeat of history, Edmund Burke laid out the logic behind the American architecture in a letter from 1791: Having previously reviewed ' The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry' by this author, I was keen to see what his latest book had to offer, and I was not disappointed. How not to lose your soul The author recommends fasting – a transformative act that has been almost completely neglected by the modern Western church. Until fairly recently, fasting was a core practice in the church, but it’s at odds with modern beliefs about the importance of getting what you want. Secular society is getting so many things wrong. Take divorce as an example. Some people think that divorce represents liberation from the patriarchy – but the author believes that men benefit from divorce much more than women. Divorce also has a devastating impact on children; it affects their ability to form healthy, intimate relationships as adults. These days, however, even many Christians are skeptical. People treat the devil as a myth or ancient nonsense. The psychologist Sigmund Freud argued that it was the repression of desire – particularly the libido – that made people unhappy. This notion has been incredibly influential in the West. Secular culture encourages people to be true to themselves and follow their desires. Our war against the three enemies of the soul is not a war of guns and bombs. It’s not against other people at all. It’s a war on lies. And the problem is less that we tell lies and more that we live them; we let false narratives about reality into our bodies, and they wreak havoc in our souls.”

He admits that what he is writing about is not that new, but it is a vital message then needs reinforcing again and again. Ideas have power only when we believe them. We hear all sorts of ideas every day, some brilliant, others ridiculous; but they have zero effect on us unless we begin to trust them as an accurate map to reality.” (p. 46) One simple way to become more like Jesus is to adopt spiritual practices, such as quiet prayer. When a Christian prays in solitude, the illusions of the self are exposed for what they really are: the devil’s lies.Comer brilliantly breaks down this concept of the world, and he does it using quotes from some great thinkers and theologians. The list of books I want to read grew significantly after this section. Ultimately, the church is called to be counterculture to the world. How do we do that? Comer again gives some really practical suggestions pointing to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Live No Lies Willpower is at its best when it does what it can (direct my body into spiritual practices) so the Spirit’s power can do what willpower can’t (overcome the three enemies of the soul).” (p. 175) Not all desires are created equal. Or at least, not all are equally beneficial. Some of our desires are higher or nobler and lead to life and freedom and peace; others are lower or more animalistic and lead to death and slavery and fear.” For those of you that felt like 6 episodes wasn't quite enough, this one is for you. Roberta Ahmanson is a brilliant expert on all things Church History. For context, she logged in for this remote interview with John Mark from a library of 20,000 books, all of which she's read ... Based on the premise that there is much to learn from the Church's history, John Mark and Roberta rewind to the culture of 5th century Rome to discuss the parallels between that moment and our own, and how Christians functioned in the midst of it.
