Version 14 feels more versatile and more performance-oriented than version 13 because of its streamlined upper, snappier forefoot and its new full DNA Loft midsole. One thing to be aware of is that the midsole of the Ghost 14 is plain EVA so there isn’t much energy return with each footstrike. The midsole does provide a very well-padded ride with plenty of foot protection. It puts my feet on a steeper downward ramp and I feel like it helps me through transitions more than shoes with a less aggressive drop.

I’ve always been a fan of Brooks shoes, and adored my Ghost 13s, so this new release had a lot to live up to. I took the 14s for a (literal) spin at my cycling gym class, as well as for a gentle 5K run, and they fit me like a glove. In true Ghost tradition, comfort reigns supreme here, with soft cushioning that makes road running feel like cloud running. These new shoes have had an upgrade, with the midsole now entirely made from Brooks’ DNA LOFT cushioning, that definitely made my running smoother and offered miles of comfort before I felt even the slightest ache. They really made my running flow better, which sounds odd, but it’s the best way I can describe the softness these shoes added to my landing and toe-off. During gait analysis you will be asked to walk and run on our in-store treadmill whilst your movements are recorded using the latest Daftfish software. A slow-motion, detailed analysis will show and explain your biomechanics, specifically looking at pronation, the inward-turning movement that occurs when your foot touches the ground. During walking and running this acts as cushioning for the body. It has a lot of padding and cushion, so it’s not lightweight. At 10.1 ounces (287g) it tips over a crucial landmark of being above 10 ounces.

The Brooks Ghost is probably the blandest running shoe in existence. If the Ghost was a pizza, it would be a Margherita. The Ghost 14 gets brand new flat laces which replace the old oval laces. I find that the flat laces distribute pressure more evenly and they make the entire lacing area flatter and more performance oriented. I really don’t get why almost every review on here says “knee pain” in it. I’ve had absolutely no knee pain whatsoever (not even a hint of it) and I’ve put about 200 miles onto these shoes so far. I also weigh over 200lbs, so if it’s anyone’s knees that should be hurting, it’s mine.

It’s neither too soft nor too firm, its upper is comfortable no matter what foot type you have and it has a remarkably stable ride for a neutral shoe.

The Ghost has an enormous, loyal fan base. It’s a certain type of runner who buys the Ghost every year: the type of runner who doesn’t like taking risks when it comes to running shoes. The platform is also nice and wide giving it a very stable ride. At 113.8mm wide in the forefoot and 94.2mm in the heel it’s above average (112.7mm and 89.3mm) giving it a robust feel that’s not wobbly or indecisive on a variety of terrain. I wouldn’t think twice about taking this on mild trails even, it’s that stable. The 3D Fit Print upper provides both stretch and structure where needed, allowing the shoe to conform comfortably to the individual foot shape. By using a GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane that is bonded directly to the upper material, the fit and flexibility remain whilst cold rain and puddles are kept out. There’s absolutely no need for break-in in the Ghost 14, Brooks made this shoe ready to take out of the box and do a 5K on day one if needed. The grip is great. There’s lots of rubber under the shoe with a variety of textures and siping. It had no problems on my runs and should work on anything you throw at it, rain or shine. From time to time carriers may deliver earlier or later, or on non working days however this is cannot be guaranteed nor should it be expected. Everyone’s gait is slightly different, but there are four main types of running styles and pronation:The thinner mesh also makes the forefoot feel more spacious but it fits true to size. It’s available in 4 different men’s widths and 3 women’s widths if you need them.
