Aiden explained: “I thought I was daft with no academic bone in my body, but after volunteering at a shelter I felt the buzz of helping others and knew I wanted to go to college and try. Euphoric Recall by Aidan Martin | Waterstones

Michael Lynagh had worked for Jim Lynagh's election to Monaghan Urban Council in 1979, so those who say that Michael Lynagh was not involved in Sinn Fein/Provisional IRA are simply liars. AM: I think it all comes down to motive. There is a huge difference between having fun with other consenting adults and putting yourself in a dangerous situation. We need to have more conversations about fetish and sex. Fetish can be massively rewarding between consenting adults. So long as no one is being harmed adults should be allowed to do what they wish with one another. When I am in a healthy place I can better make decisions about how I want to express myself sexually. However, when I was very unwell I found myself seeking out pain and abuse. That is a different world altogether because there are people out there who can exploit that. What a truly remarkable, emotional and honest memoir. In my opinion, this was a powerful book with a spectacular and positive message that is achieved from a straight talking description of an honest account of how life can be, captured via some hard hitting accounts. Euphoric Recall" is truly one of the most frank, inspiring, harrowing (at points), insightful, truthful and brave books I have ever had the privilege of reading. Aidan lays bare his soul unashamedly to allow us, the reader into some of the most personal, dangerous and intimate moments that have not only shaped his own character and the lessons he learned personally but has also connected with his readers on a deep level which has provided the opportunity for Euphoric Recall to reach and relate to many, many people, a feat in which I find very few can achieve. In my own case there were many instances of which very profound.

The book covers topics that are not spoken about enough, in a way that highlights that addiction can happen to anyone. Trauma can happen to anyone. Not only that, it’s possible to turn your life around and use your experiences to help others! The speaker and activist was also joined by local musician Martin Livingstone, who performed some of his original songs. Martin also shared how his past experience of engaging with West Lothian Youth Action Project encouraged his passion for music, which ultimately helped him to pursue his musical career. It was a normal way of life to get involved in substances, there was just nothing there for us so I never considered college.

Aidan's honesty and open presentation was good to hear. His bravery in sharing his life was refreshing." He says he applauds the Scottish Government for ‘holding their hands up’ and admitting drastic measures are needed to help lower drug deaths. AM: My advice would be to make sure you have good support in your life. Good people around you who will be honest if they think that revisiting certain things is potentially self-harming for you. For me writing about it helped. But depending on the person it could potentially be a trigger. So take advice from good people around you. But most of all trust in your own gut. That’s what I did. I knew I was ready. And not in a self-deluding way. I just knew it was time. LL: Thank you! Next, can you tell us about your publishing journey? How did you wind up at Guts Publishing? I wonder if some of Aidan’s addictions were his way of being in control of what happened to him, or having a mental excuse for why they happened to him.So to answer your question, I think that first and foremost as a writer you need to be honest with yourself before you expect to put your truth out there for others to perceive. was stood down - disclosed the names of two Female PIRA Volunteers to this Author, who were living in Aughnacloy and who were not known to The RUC, this Author has never disclosed their names to anyone) A truly essential read for those interested in lived experiences—and not just statistics."— Darren 'Loki' McGarvey, author of Poverty Safari (Orwell Prize 2018). The Bound Together project uses books to help raise awareness of the impact of drugs and alcohol on families, and it was amazing to hear from Shirley and Aidan about their journey together. In Euphoric Recall, Aidan says she is the strongest person he knows and last night we got to see that as she shared openly and honestly with us. The audience were all brilliant not just with their questions but how they interacted with each other.”
