About this deal

The base sensitivity of the Nikon D5000 is ISO 200, but you can go down to ISO 100 using the expanded sensitivity setting of L1. In movie studios, pulling focus is a cinematic technique usually performed by someone other than the camera operator, who is too busy framing the image to attend to focus as well. It was the second Nikon DSLR camera to feature movie mode after the feature was introduced by the D90, though this capability has now been extended to other models as well, such as the D300S and the D3S. Autofocus System Nikon Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module with TTL phase detection, 11 focus points (including 1 cross-type sensor) and AF-assist illuminator (range approx. Often light this dim doesn't result in a clear photo anyway, but if you're shooting in really crappy light, you want a D700 or D3.

As with all digital SLRs so far, the Nikon D5000 is better for capturing video snapshots that you can string together in a video editor, rather than longer recordings, because the camera can't autofocus while you record.Still image quality from the Nikon D5000 reveals one awesome image maker, whose high-ISO settings are mind-blowing. The recent boom in DSLR sales has seen all the major manufacturers adding bulked-up or stripped-down entry level models, repositioning their offerings to make sure that anyone willing to put up with the size and weight of a DSLR will look at one of their models. It's exacerbated by camera movement, so attaching a VR lens does have some positive effect, but not much.

auto-area AF shutter lag numbers at wide angle, I noticed considerable AF lag while shooting indoors in low light situations, especially in Wide-area AF mode. Remember also the trouble with quick-release mechanisms on most tripods, which gets in the way of the swivel screen, requiring you to flip the screen before locking it down to the tripod. Nikon doesn't say much about which processors are used in each camera, except to give them a name: the Expeed Image Processing System. Camera technical details can get complicated quickly, but we all need a place to start before diving into the deep end. It can be quite annoying to get the camera back from the lab with this mode enabled, but at least it doesn't reset itself after each shot.As you can see from the table below the D5000 offers many of the features of the D90 and certainly represents a major step up from the D60. Autofocusing is not possible while you're recording a movie with the Nikon D5000, unlike the Canon T1i.

Like the Nikon D40, Nikon D40X, Nikon D60, Nikon D3000, Nikon D3100 and Nikon D5100, the D5000 has no in-body autofocus motor, and fully automatic autofocus requires a lens with an integrated autofocus-motor. As in past models, the Color Matrix Metering system compares what it sees in the image to a database of 30,000 photos to make its metering decisions for each scene. High ISO (up to 6400) is usable with minimal noise, plus the quiet shutter release mode means that I was able to use it at an awards ceremony where one of my daughters received a certificate without drawing attention to myself.DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions. The right-hand grip bears more resemblance to that of the D60 - it's a wee bit uncomfortable for photographers with large hands and/or longish fingers, but not annoyingly so. Adding D-Movie mode and an articulating LCD gives the Nikon D5000 two more excellent selling points that can actually serve consumer and enthusiast photographers well. These days, a 4GB or 8GB card is inexpensive enough, and you'll want a large card if you plan on recording many HD movies. Otherwise, the Nikon D5000 is a Nikon: It's well-built, has a nice soft shutter sound, and works like a champ.

Colour saturation is also well maintained up to ISO 3200, though it does drop noticeably beyond that. Not only is the D5000 the same as, or a little quieter than the LEICA, the D5000 winds itself at the same time, while the LEICA still needs to wind film. That's because one of the mirrors is actually an LCD, and when you remove its power source, it loses much of its reflectivity. The left side also has a relief for the palm, making it easier to cradle the camera while extending your fingers to turn the zoom and focus rings.Let's better appreciate what we have, consider what gives us joy, and get out there to take some photos.
