About this deal

This technique isn’t limited to combat situations, it can be used for any future fear in everyday life. E.g. Exams, interviews, dates, media experiences, opening a business, starting a job, mountain climbing, learning to drive, professional competitions such as MMA or Boxing. The list is endless. Oh, it’s Ant Middleton, let’s kill him”, says no enemy in the battlefield. The same applies in life. The world is brutal and it’s simply showing up the way it does to everyone. Focus on what you can control and that includes avoid taking things personal. The Fear Bubble” is a concept & technique developed by former British Special Forces, Ant Middleton, which he explains fully in his excellent book, aptly named “The Fear Bubble”. Enter the 1st fear bubble (round 1), when it’s done, imagine that bubble bursting and rest remain outside of any fear bubble

Though Ant might make bad decisions he is man enough to face the consequences, as well as his war with his ego. I say war as he might lose a couple of battles but the war goes on and is ongoing till death. Ant explains the mindsets needed to succeed, to grow, thrive and how to use them to not only survive in the most dangerous physical challenge, but the his most dangerous and constant enemy, himself. And at the top of Everest, in desperate, life-threatening conditions, he was forced to face up to his greatest fear, of leaving his wife and children without a husband and father. His methods for not being overwhelmed by fear definitely has some practical use for everyday life. It also is a reminder that you should always want to test your limits.I couldn't put this down and read it in one sitting. Over the past couple of years I've listened to a number of people and read a number of books that emphasise the importance of a positive mindset and techniques for turning a negative mindset around. The techniques in this book do work though I can say that in hindsight. Stepping "from the corridor through the door" for the 1st time is difficult but cathartic. It's important to step through the 2nd door soon after. Fear is simply our mind and body switching on it’s sympathetic nervous system (fight of flight), and releasing stress hormones to prepare the body to fight or run away from danger.

Another component of “the fear bubble” is redefining the feeling of fear as the body saying “let’s go”. As each fear bubble is entered saying to ourselves “let’s go” will help to positively reframe the fear, and trigger the action required. Unfortunately, I felt that his attitude during the climb made him come across as disrespectful to those he was with, a spoilt brat and an arrogant human who did not want to listen to others, especially when they were more experienced. The book seemed clumsily put together and could have been better edited to remove the repetition of the same concepts. I’m surprised at how popular this book has become and disappointed that it wasn’t better. Where possible, fear bubbles should be as short as possible. Breaking a threatening situation down into multiple fear bubbles, and visualising each one “popping” or “bursting” as they are completed can help harness the fear for longer. After watching Ant climb Everest in his program and going to see him live talking about it I was unsure whether this book would bring anything extra to the table. Trypophobia, characterised as the fear of holes, has also been linked to a more generalised aversion to circular shapes such as bubbles. But what makes bubbles so disgusting? The answer may be found lurking just under the skin.

In prison, he was thrust into the unknown, cut off from friends and family, isolated with thoughts of failure and dread for his future. Middleton is no stranger to fear: from working as a point man in the Special Forces, he faced and overcame fear daily, never knowing what lay ahead. In prison, he was separated from friends and family, with an uncertain future. More recently, at the top of Mount Everest, in life-threatening conditions, he confronted his bigger fear, of leaving his wife widowed and children without a father.

Love him or hate him Ant Middleton has come up with a different way to look at combating fear and anxiety. If there is future event which is causing feelings of fear, then, the technique would involve visualising a “fear bubble” in that future space and time just at the moment where the stressor will occur, and ending immediately after. The people who love you will offer you constructive criticism, because they want you to be the best version of yourself that you can be. They know you’re better than that. They know what you’re worth. They’re not having a pop because they want to bring you down a peg or two.” Enter the 1st fear bubble (question 1), when it’s done, imagine that bubble bursting and pause for a few moments Without fear, there’s no challenge. Without challenge, there’s no growth. Without growth, there’s no life.
