About this deal

Tritium tubes glow on their own with no need to be charged, making it the perfect design for nighttime wear. The case design is modern, featuring several beveled and angled surfaces adding to the visual appeal of the watch. He’s always looking for the best gear for the job—whether it be new watch, pen, flashlight, knife, or wallet. The deep navy blue dial is accented with an orange seconds hand and a very subtle 60-minute track running around the dial, also featuring orange cardinal numerals. Seiko understands this and, in designing the Seiko 5, has created a field watch that meets all the necessary requirements.

Like all the best field watches on this list, this Filson model is inspired by those iconic timepieces worn by military personnel in the early 20th century and combines that tough yet understated aesthetic with peerless functionality and practicality. This watch has a 24-hour layout as well, but it takes the form of hour markers running from 1 to 24 instead of the sub-dial utilised in the Orient Defender. It has a hard-wearing stainless steel case which, at only 37 millimeters, is very compact, sitting snugly on the wrist without drawing too much attention. MKII’s Cruxible (polished Hellion version reviewed here) is a recreation of the A-11 spec field watch commonly seen throughout World War II.

We picked out a bunch of useful sub-categories, then chose 2 watches that fall into each thanks to their standout features, with something for everyone. While I don’t know what Orient has in development, being able to hand-wind a field watch is always a good idea. However, it still maintains classic field watch elements such as the army-green canvas strap, 330ft water resistance, and solid stainless steel construction.

In 2009, Orient became an exclusive subsidiary of Seiko Epson Group, itself a subsidiary company of Seiko Group. Therefore, they look equally good worn with a suit to the office, with smart casual attire, or even just casually at the weekend. This particular model is a tribute to the brand’s 1957 Railmaster timepieces and is based on the original antimagnetic watch designed for those working near electric fields.Christopher Ward didn’t just copy an old watch, they gave it some of their own flair, including the stunning 38mm light catcher case, expertly-crafted bracelet and a chronometer-grade automatic.

The army-green strap has a suitable military air to it and there’s an engraving of a plane on the back, serving as a fun reminder of the history behind the watch. The style blends the functionality of Swiss watch technology with a retro design that has a day/date and 24-hour display. While today field watches have evolved to include other features, their defining quality is their reliability and robustness.A round black dial and mineral crystal window come together with a buckle closure to create this classic stainless steel timepiece. Launched in 1953, it was primarily about functionality and improved legibility, with an improved dial design that allowed the wearer to read the time long after the sunset over the mountains. This field watch has that same aura of no-nonsense elegance and reliability with its bright dial and sweeping red second hand. The case is 45 millimeters, which is fairly large for a field watch, but the size lends the timepiece a distinct heavy-duty profile and makes it extra easy to read the time. The watch harnesses self-winding mechanical movement and features a black dial with luminous hands, index hour markers and Arabic numerals.

The caseback features details on the watch’s basic specifications, along with a delicate engraving of the Orient logo. Lume on this watch is also generously applied on the hands and indices making it very visible in the dark however the longevity of the lume does leave a bit to be desired. Meanwhile, self-illuminating tritium gas tubes give the dial a lasting glow so you can read the time in any conditions. With its authentic vibe and attention to detail, the Timex Expedition Scout field watch is a real bargain and it’s no surprise that it’s one of the brand’s best-selling models. lug to lug distance and I have to say it is actually one of the most comfortable watches I currently have especially when worn on my 2 piece canvas strap. When it comes to the lower end of the budget, Seiko and Hamilton make some of the best high-quality, affordable field watches.
