About this deal

Everything else in the system, having come from using the previous generations of DJI gimbals, was familiar, fast, and easy to use! It felt like slipping on a new pair of custom-fitted gloves. Improved LCD Screen You can also set a cutom option and enable or disable different axes. 3D Roll 360 moves it into the “flashlight” position and you can spin around the roll axis to create the spinning effect. And last is Portrait, which also goes into flashlight mode but supports vertical shooting.

DJI RS 2 features an advanced 3D Focus System, upgrading the DJI Ronin-S focus wheel and adding ToF sensors for precise autofocusing even when using manual lenses and/or shooting in low light environments. This intelligent upgrade makes a world of difference, giving you exceptional autofocus in demanding shooting environments. DJI RS 2: Improved Battery Performance Unlike the Ronin-S where the focus wheel was attached to the side on the RS 2 the focus, the wheel is integrated into the grip and can be operated by your index finger. A new 1.4” color touchscreen on the rear of the RS 2 serves as a way to cycle through settings, camera data or even a live feed from the camera. Two onboard RSA ports can double as NATO ports, enabling the RS 2 to be used in conjunction with other DJI and third-party accessories, including jibs, car attachments, sliders, grips and remote controllers. DJI RSC 2 Raven Eye is useful and improves performance by ensuring you are using the camera’s feed, though it does eat up battery life so make sure to unplug it if you aren’t actively using it. Like the DJI RS 2, the RSC 2 also benefits from a new 1-inch OLED display, which shows camera data and lets you change settings. This particularly stood out in our hands-on DJI RSC 2 review, which describes it as "a simple but transformative addition".In this review, I’m looking at the more expensive Combo kit which includes the added extras including the focus motor, phone adapter, RavenEye and plenty more. But if you’re using a small camera (like a Sony A7S III) you’re not likely to see any real-world differences between the two models.

Doing this freehand generally creates chaos, but mount the Ronin RS 2 in position with RavenEye neatly slotted in place on its mount under the gimbal and you have an incredibly powerful tool. As with the previous Ronin-S, there are several possibilities for wired connections; these include Video transmission/follow focus motor port (USB-C), RSS camera control port (USB-C) and Follow Focus motor port (USB-C). As all of these ports are USB-C, so I was glad to see that DJI has marked which port is which. In use, the power of the small motor is incredible and enables you to easily capture that professional, smooth fluid motion that these devices have been designed to enable.

Retreat a distance from the DJI RS 2 with RavenEye, mount your camera phone on a tripod head with the Ronin App open and then as you pan, tilt and move the head with the camera phone. As you do the Ronin RS 2 copies the movement. Stabilization is easily the most essential feature of DJI Ronin products as it allows users to get smooth footage for professional-level results. And while 3-axis stabilization is features on both Ronin gimbals, DJI has improved the stabilization technology for DJI RS 2. The Titan Stabilization Algorithm and SuperSmooth feature offer significant upgrades compared to DJI Ronin-S. Adding a touchscreen was incredibly helpful. It means you don’t have to dive into the mobile app to make some of the changes and can more easily make adjustments in the field. It also shows off the current modes and settings, which can be helpful if you have multiple operators for the same gimbal as there were only LED lights available. RavenEye is the stand out feature of the Combo kit that I tested, it’s truly amazing, and the signal is just about as robust as they come. Then there was the size, it just felt too small, with the Ronin-S I can find a balance, but with the DJI RS 2, it all felt far too top-heavy. It may have been lighter, but I couldn’t hold that lighter weight for as long as I do with the heavier weight Ronin-S. DJI RS 2 continues pushing gimbal technology forward with the ability to support heavier payloads while capturing ultra-smooth cinematic footage. Based on years of experience developing predictive technology, a newly optimized Titan Stabilization Algorithm reduces the need for manual user input while compensating for user movement and optimizing the gimbal tilt and angle. Additionally, a new SuperSmooth mode provides another level of camera stability, especially for compensating longer focal length lenses of up to 100mm.

The first major advantage of the new Ronin RS 2 is the size and weight; it’s smaller and lighter than the old Ronin-S. The weight reduction is welcome. However, I wasn’t so keen on the smaller and more compact sizing. While DJI RS 2 might look similar to its predecessor, there are some key design differences that you should be aware of. The two most notable DJI RS 2 upgrades are a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and a carbon-fiber construction. Carbon fiber not only decreases the overall device weight, it also allows for heavier payloads, up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs) tested. DJI RS 2 also has a more ergonomic overall look and feel, which rounds a gimbal that is lighter, supports heavier cameras, and is easy than ever to use. Among the mode options is a Super Smooth setting. This will help correct for jitters that may still be showing up if you are on a moving platform, such as a boat or in a car. You’ll want to use the lens strap per DJI’s recommendation as it makes sure everything is secure. It’s important to do if you are mounting the camera and gimbal to something like a car as it reduces strain on the actual lens mount. The new RavenEye Image Transmission System of DJI RS 2 gives operators a simplified way to get remote camera viewing and parameter control. This system transmits 1080p video from up to 200 m away with a latency of just 60 ms, letting users focus on getting the perfect shot without worrying about equipment. If you are working on a professional project with a big camera crew, this new DJI RS 2 feature conveniently provides everyone with a clear view of the action.Instantly you can feel that there is less room for manoeuvre than with the Ronin-S, and with the wires, screen and focus handle it all starts to feel a little cramped. Out of the box, the set up was incredibly straight forward and easy. We tried out the focus motor and it was nice to control it from the scroll wheel. If I would have connected another scroll wheel I could have had one scroll wheel control the motor and the built-in wheel control a setting in the camera. Very useful on long shoots and run & gun moments. Another feature that stands out is that the power grip containing the battery, can be removed and the gimbal can be connected by the RSA/NATO connectors.
