About this deal

K-pat, the herd boy, must find a way to end the drought and the suffering of the animals on the plain. You’ll see my updates as I’m reading and know which books I’m liking and what I’m not finishing and why.

Summary: Published six years after her award winning "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears", this book is a beautifully illustrated cumulative rhyming tale about a drought in the Kapati plain of Kenya discovered by an anthropologist in the early 20th century who had noticed its a rhythmic pattern in the original telling reminiscent of "The House that Jack Built. Her picture-book, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears, won co-illustrators Leo and Diane Dillon a Caldecott Medal. This Kenyan folktale uses a cumulative refrain and the familiar rhythm of “The House That Jack Built” to tell the story of how Ki-pat brought rain to Kapiti Plain. It is listed in our math text as being a text to be used with mathematics through rhythm and patterns and would work for poetry 3rd through 6th grade. Not so much a weakness as a common element in traditional literature, but in the story the drought ended because an Eagle feather dropped from the sky. There were so many aspects of the book that I enjoyed it's hard to pick a favorite, but I think I really loved most the building rhyme. The second fairly obvious observation is that the format of the story, the cumulative or House-that-Jack-Built format, works well for this tale in which each thing is directly related to the next. RODRIGUES PUBLISHER: PAVY PAGES: 56 AGE RECOMMENDED: 3+ Once, there were three friends, Bear, Beaver and Bee.

As the big, black cloud, all heavy with rain, that shadowed the ground on Kapiti Plain’ lingers in the sky ahead, who will save the day and end this draught over Kapiti Plain? Along the way, he meets several animals who help him on his quest, including a wise old baboon and a group of playful gazelles. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that! The birds and animals started to migrate and a herdsman named Ki-pat wanted to end the drought in Kapiti plain so that his cattle could graze on grass. With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not.He made an arrow out of a feather that fell from a bird by him when he was watching his herd that so desperatel needed water.
