About this deal

For the humble consumer, as our research shows, flushable claims are confusing. Manufacturers are trumpeting words like "dispersible" and "biodegradable", while the water industry urges the public to keep all wipes out of the pipes. They are also unscented and sourced from plant-based fibers making them flushable and sustainable. They are sewer and septic safe, 100% biodegradable and free of alcohol, paraben, and fragrance. More promisingly, some companies use wood pulp exclusively. That means the wipes can biodegrade over time, and won’t fill our landfills for years to come. All of the ingredients in Eco Pea’s baby wipes are rated either 1, 2, or 3 for safety on a scale of 1 to 10 in the EWG Skin Deep Database (1 is the best rating, 2 is the worst). When you take into account the eco-friendliness of these wipes, it’s an easy choice to put them near the top of my list!

After all, moist environments (as wipes are) are a ripe environment for bacterial growth, and you definitely don’t want to use a bacteria covered wipe on a baby – it’s dangerous. Take a look at what I’ve chosen them, as well as what’s actually in them, below My Winner – Healthy Nest

These wipes are larger than standard flushable wipes by around 25% and contain aloe vera and vitamin E to protect those sensitive areas. Now that you know some of the greenest eco-friendly baby brands available, it’s also important to know about greenwashing. The baby wipes market in the UK is awash with green buzzwords, many of them without substantiation. Here are some of the most common terms to be wary of: Flushable Some common skin benefiting additives in baby wipes include glycerin (rated 1 or 2 on EWG’s skin deep database, depending on use) and botanicals. Fragrances are typically made up of many different component ingredients, but manufacturers are only required to list “fragrance” as a blanket ingredient. Because of this, it’s actually impossible to know whether a certain ingredient or potentially toxic chemical is contained within.

The competition regulator isn't too impressed either. On 12 December it announced impending court action against flushable wipes makersKimberly-Clark Australia and Pental for making false or misleading claims by saying their products disintegrate as well as toilet paper. As they are made from plant-based materials, these wipes are also biodegradable and compostable, making them as good for the planet too!

They are also not tested on animals and are fragrance-free. They are slightly larger than standard wipes and are fully flushable. Pros They have developed a new set of guidelines called GD4 which is a seven-part test that all flushable wipes must pass to be considered flushable. Those wipes that pass this test do not pose any threat to our sewer systems. If they aren't taken out in our treatment plants they end up in our oceans and creeks Fiona Copeman, Sydney Water In addition the base sheet, there’s the formulation: a combination of water, chemical, and natural ingredients that together make the baby wipe function.
