About this deal

Our new series is set in 1940 with Foyle, Sam and Milner investigating seemingly minor crimes in and around Hastings while an epic drama is unfolding on the world stage. But the cases soon lead them down dark and dangerous paths and Foyle finds his quest for morality tested to the limit." Rex flies with Andrew Foyle and they are old school friends. He always defends Andrew and in one scene gets involved in a brawl. I was told to run into the middle of the bar, flatten Damian O'Hare and then spin around and pull off this guy who was punching Julian Ovenden. It was great. Adds Julian: "Andrew is a great character and one of the high spots is working with Michael. I've always admired him as a terrific actor. He's demanding and a perfectionist and it's great to work with someone like that. I've learned an awful lot from him." The pilots were incredibly young, edging 19 or 20 and they were put under terrible pressure. I think there was a ratio of three to one enemy pilots against them but they completely out-performed expectations and saw them off. I don't know if I'd have their courage. Hunter is a working class lad who went to Oxford. In the 1920s it was good if a working class boy got to grammar school, and very unusual to go to Oxford. So he must have been very bright but he let someone take advantage of him.

Laurence's TV work includes Ultimate Force. Before Foyle's War he appeared in Peter Hall's acclaimed production of Mrs Warren's Profession. He is currently filming a leading role in a new ITV drama Island at War. Fifty Ships" is another wonderful 'Foyle's War' episode, with everything that is so good about the show very much in evidence. It couldn't be a more perfect way to start Season 2 and to me is among the best episodes of the series. Personally didn't have a problem with Henry Goodman's American accent, American accents are not easy to do for a Brit and Goodman does make a valiant effort and did quite well to my ears, better than a lot of Brits attempting American accents. Like with many 'Foyle's War' episodes, on re-watch there was much more appreciation had for how well established the character development, tone and themes are for so early on and things that didn't quite connect entirely at first made more sense on re-watches.

British actor Henry Goodman is the goto man when a British production wants an oily American. It is typecasting which has a negative effect in this episode because it kind of gives the game away. a b "ITV may revive second world war drama Foyle's War". The Guardian. 9 April 2008. Archived from the original on 6 August 2017 . Retrieved 16 May 2017. Julian Ovenden is full of admiration for the Second World War fighter pilots after portraying Andrew Foyle in Foyle's War.

I think the episode was marred with some clunky writing. I almost felt like switching off when Milner offers homeless Samantha a chance to stay over at his house while his wife was away. Then you have the scene after dinner Samantha asks Milner to dance with her and guess who catches them out by returning home early! But there were also countless tragedies and administrative failings that occurred in London. There was a public outcry, for example, over conditions in the largest public shelters, which were often without sanitation and even lighting. This eventually cost the Home Secretary, Sir John Anderson, his job.
